Shit.

We both froze, staring at each other. Then he lunged for me, and suddenly, his body was pinning me against the counter.

I couldn’t breathe. He was so close. And so hot.

The next second, he was snarling in my face, his enraged breaths hitting my lips. “You’re completely fucking crazy. Who the fuck throwsbreadat someone?”

His angry words cut the spell I was under, and an involuntary laugh burst out of me. Maybe he was right. Maybe I was crazy. Or maybe it was just the way he got under my skin that made me act this way. Whatever, it was kind of funny now I thought about it. I gripped the counter, trying to compose myself. It was a lost cause when I saw his lips twitch, and I knew he was holding back his own smile. Then I couldn’t hold back my laughter.

“You’re fucking crazy,” he repeated, this time with far less heat. The corners of his lips kicked up the tiniest bit, and it made me feel warm inside.

Now we were so close together, I found myself noticing little details about him that I hadn’t picked up on before, like the thickness of his lashes and the faint dusting of freckles across his nose.

He wassogorgeous.

My laughter died away, and I took an unsteady breath. “I’m sorry. I…I wasn’t thinking straight. I didn’t mean to do that.” Without any conscious thought, I reached up to his cheek. “You’ve got breadcrumbs here.” The second the pad of my finger made contact with his warm skin, he shivered.

His eyes widened, and he jumped back from me as if I’d burned him. Spinning on his heel, he shot out of the room and thundered up the stairs, leaving me standing in the kitchen with two wasted slices of bread at my feet, wondering what the fuck had possessed me to act the way I just had.
