“Yeah.”

“Okay.” Releasing my hand, he dug in his pocket for his phone. He leaned in close to me as he began scrolling through the photos, telling me about each image in a low tone. There was a weird feeling inside me. I’d never experienced it before, and I wasn’t sure what it was, but it felt a lot like butterflies.

It scared the fuck out of me.

Clearing my throat, I straightened up, shifting away from him. “My mum has a cat called Jasper, and he’s practically feral.” Thinking about the cat always put me in a bad mood, and it managed to banish that weird feeling I was having from being close to Noah.

“I take it from your face that you don’t like the cat?” Amusement danced in Noah’s eyes as his lips curved into a grin.

“No. He’s evil. It’s not funny, so you can stop laughing.”

Noah just laughed again, the bastard. “I’ll take your word for it.” His amusement died away. “Are you close to your mum?”

I picked at the blades of grass beneath my fingers. “Yeah. Not so much in an affectionate way, like she’s not a hugger—”

“Now I know where you get it from,” he interrupted me with a teasing smirk that I wanted to kiss off his face. Instead, I shoved at him, making him lose his balance.

I grinned as he stuck his middle finger up at me and then I continued. “But we’re close. It was just the two of us for a long time after my dad died. She’s got a boyfriend now, though.”

Noah read my expression correctly because he didn’t ask any more questions. I was happy that my mum was happy; I guess I was just having a hard time getting around the fact that she had someone else to share things with now. It wasn’t just the two of us anymore.

“I seem to remember that you promised to buy me lunch. Is there anywhere to eat around here?”

“I did not promise to buy you lunch; I asked if you were hungry. But yeah, okay, let’s get food. My treat.” Climbing to my feet, I looked down at Noah’s smiling face and was struck all over again by how good he looked. So fucking sexy and—

Those butterflies were back, and with them came the panic.

What the fuck was I going to do?

Space to think would’ve been a good idea, but instead, when we got back from the park, I invited myself into Noah’s room, where he introduced me toAttack on Titan. I’d never watched anime before, but I found myself invested from the beginning. By the time the sixth episode started, I was reclined on Noah’s bed, with one arm slung across his stomach while he traced patterns on my skin with the pads of his fingers. I knew I shouldn’t be doing this with him when I didn’t know what I wanted, knew I should go back to my room, but I couldn’t bring myself to move.

I ended up falling asleep, still holding him.
