“Have you heard from him?”

“No.” It was difficult to swallow as I choked up, overwhelmed suddenly by the fact that I still hadn’t heard one word from Tyler.

“You’ll work things out.” Her soft smile exuded warmth.

I rolled the paper from the muffin into a ball, tossed it into the basket, and dusted my hands together. “I don’t know. It feels different now.”

“Why? Because you have a crush on him?”

“I do not have a crush on Tyler Sanderson.”

“I know.” She patted my leg with a smug smile on her face. “It’s a lot more than a crush.”

“I love him, Catherine.”

“I know.”

“And I screwed up.”

“Then you should talk to him.” I picked at my nails, avoiding answering her. “Youneedto talk to him.”

“Yeah, I know. But—”

“He’s a good guy, Marisa,” she said, cutting me off. “He’s a decent guy. And I know he loves you too. He’ll understand if you speak from the heart.”

“That sounds like something you’d read in some sappy greeting card.”

She shrugged with a laugh. “I’m not gonna lie. That’s probably where I got it.” She placed her hand on my knee and cocked her head to the side. “You are so much braver than you give yourself credit for.”

“I'm not brave.” Tears blurred my eyes. “I think I lost him. I’m going to wind up with ten cats.”

Catherine fought her laughter. “I won’t let that happen.”

A tear slipped over and down my cheek. “I’m gonna end up alone.”

“You're not alone, babe. You’re never alone. You got me.”

Her words caused a ghost of a smile to kiss my mouth. “I fucked it up.”

“Maybe. But at least now you know he’s the right one.”

“How?”

“Because he’s the only guy you’ve ever been upset about.”

“What if what they say is true? That for people like me, love comes and goes like the weather?”

“If that’s the case, then that love is not the love for you.”

She made sense, but I still didn’t feel any relief or comfort. “But what if we can’t withstand even the smallest storm?”

“I think you’re underestimating both of you.”

“What if he doesn’t see what I see?” I couldn’t help the tears that burst forth. I was bawling my eyes out, choking on the fear that Tyler gave up on me. Catherine’s arms came around me. I clung to her, afraid I’d fall into oblivion if I let go.

“Shh, shh,” she chanted softly, rocking back and forth as her hands swept up and down my back. She held me until my crying subsided.

“You’re going to make a great mother,” I said, still holding onto her.
