I withdrew my touch. He was bound to distract me if I didn’t break contact. “Confidence is sexy.” He grunted from the impact of my next three punches, caught just slightly off guard.

I huffed out my breaths and sent him another wink. “Yes, it is.”

“Your turn,” he told me. I gathered he wanted to show me his moves as well. My mouth watered, anticipating how sexy he would look all serious and focused, raining down hell on his rival.

I held up my hand when my cell rang, and I saw my captain calling.

He nodded, giving me the go-ahead to answer.

“Gotta go. There’s a body.” I was disappointed I had to go. But death was my job.

“We’ll pick up here next time.”

“Definitely,” I agreed and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. This was not the place to show public displays of affection. There were too many people around. “Thank you.”

“Anytime.”

That night after I got home from work, I texted Tyler.Ready for round two?

* * *

We met at Roy’s again. This time it was after hours, and it was just Tyler and me. The sky was still pitch black, and even though it was super early—or late, depending on how you looked at it—I was amped.

I felt Tyler’s lips at my temple as we stood at the door. He unlocked it and led us inside, flipping switches as he went.

“How do you have a key? Your name’s not Roy.”

His teeth flashed in his perfect smile. “Nope. I’m a silent partner though. The biggest benefit is, I have access to this place any time I want.” He flipped on a few lights. “Follow me,” he beckoned.

I followed him into the ring.

Tyler cracked his neck and threw down his towel.

“What do you want to do?” I asked him.

He gave me a lopsided grin and said, “I want you to hit me as hard as you can.” He winked. “Don’t hold back, Marisa. But no face punches, though. Keep it clean. This isn’t a fight to win.”

“It’s not?”

“No.” Tyler considered a moment, then grinned. His perfect teeth, his perfect mouth, his perfect dimples. “Well, I suppose it is. But it’s more just for fun. For the rush of adrenaline. Not for inflicting pain—or receiving it. Let’s not get all BDSM about it.”

I laughed until it hurt. Even as upset as I was about the call from today, Tyler still found a way to make me laugh. “We’ll just have to see about that last part,” I said as I started wrapping my hands.

“Right now is more about you being able to unleash all that anger.”

“Awesome. I just hope you’re ready. Cause I’ve got a lot of anger.”

“It’s unnerving to see you like this.”

“All part of the job,” I muttered.

“I know. That doesn’t mean I like it.”

I didn’t know how to reply. What I said was true. Death was part of my job. Dealing with the aftermath of it was never predictable. Some of them, like the baby we had been called out for, hit you like a grenade, obliterating your heart.

Tyler must have sensed how I felt because he changed the subject. “What do you want if you win?”

“Huh?” The question caught me off guard. He had changed the topic, and it got me off-kilter.
