He looked away from her and sighed, feeling like a lout, and she grasped his chin, pulling his eyes back to hers.

“I loved every minute of it.Anyfeelings of discomfort, which wereveryminor, were quickly replaced byotherfeelings.”

He stared at her silently.

“Stop scowling,” she demanded, and pinched his thigh. “I didn't do anything I didn't want to do, okay? What do you think popped into my mind when I was standing in your bedroom? Do you really think I was worried about getting to my parents’ condo on time?”

He chuckled. “I guess not. But it was my idea—”

“Yes, it was. And it was a damn good one. I was a very eager participant, and to my embarrassment, I remember being pretty vocal about how much I enjoyed it.”

He chuckled. “Oh yeah, you were vocal all right.”

She closed her eyes and smiled ruefully. “I hope the walls in your house are thick.”

“They are.” His expression sobered. “I just want you to be happy.”

“Iam. Ridiculously happy.”

He stared at her for a long moment, then kissed her. “I am too, Lizzy. Very happy.”

Will hadplenty of work to do at the office, but had neither the energy nor the inclination to do a single thing. Thoughts of his weekend with Elizabeth kept floating through his mind, and he was unable to focus on anything. He glanced at his watch and saw that it was only eleven, and decided it was a good time to call Jane and pick her brain about the Vineyard.

After exchanging pleasantries with her, he got to the reason for his call. “I was curious about the inn your family owns on Martha's Vineyard. What's the name of it?”

“The Gardiner Inn. It's in Edgartown.”

He jotted down the name. “I was thinking of taking Elizabeth there this weekend. We've talked about going this summer…I thought it would be a nice surprise for her birthday.”

“Hm. You might be out of luck. They usually book up months in advance. Do you want me to call my aunt and uncle for you?”

“No, that’s okay. Do you think she’d mind staying somewhere else?”

“No, not at all.”

“Great. Hey, I forgot to ask Charles about the Breast Cancer Research Foundation benefit on the seventeenth. Are you two going?”

“As far as I know. Are you and Lizzy going?”

“I have to ask her. I haven't done that yet.”

“Will! You have to give the girl time to find a dress. It's black-tie, right?”

“Yes. I wasn't thinking about the dress thing.”

“You better ask her tonight, or tomorrow at least. She'll need to shop.”

“Not as easy as pulling a tux out of the closet, huh?”

“Definitely not. You men have it made.”

He smiled. “Thanks for the help, Jane, I appreciate it.”

“You’re welcome. Give me a call if you need anything else.”
