Elizabeth sighed. As much as she knew she had a pile of work to do, her brain just wouldn't cooperate.

It was incredible how things had changed from when she first saw Will on Friday to when she’d said goodbye to him this morning. Thinking back to the events of last week, she was glad she’d taken Jane's advice and talked to him. Not that she had a choice; his unexpected appearance at her house made conversation unavoidable.

If she had to pick the exact moment when a ray of hope had broken through the gloom, it was when she spied him walking down the beach, his eyes fixed on her. The fact that he came all the way back from California to see her, to resolve things, illustrated the kind of man he truly was.

And look at us now. They’d come so far in just a few short days. When she’d made the decision to move their relationship to the next level, it was without reservation. There was no second-guessing; she’d followed her heart. He was everything she’d thought he would be and more. Patient, loving, and tender, but also passionate and intense.

She sighed as images of him floated through her mind. She hadn't been intimate with a man in years, and in the space of twenty-four hours, she’d had sex three times. Not that she was breaking any records, butthree times! She felt the ridiculous need to fan herself, and grinned when she remembered what Jane had said about Will not doing anything by halves. That's for sure.

She pulled her cell phone from her desk, hesitating only briefly before she called him.

“Hello, Miss Bennet,” he answered quietly.

“Hello, Mr. Darcy. Am I interrupting anything?”

“I’ve been daydreaming most of the day, so I suppose you did interrupt something.”

“You too? I thought it was just me. I think I've managed to catch up on my emails, but I've only done about an hour’s worth of research. Algae blooms aren't doing it for me today.”

He chuckled. “You've completely ruined me.”

“I beg to differ. I think we've ruined each other—for today, anyway. I just can't get my thoughts in order. It's ridiculous.”

“Well, maybe I can distract you with something else.”

“Please do.”

“The Breast Cancer Research Foundation benefit is coming up, and I was wondering if you’d like to go with me.”

“Yes! Of course I would. When is it?”

“Um, next Saturday. It's black-tie.”

“Does that mean I'll get to see you in a tux?”

He chuckled. “Yes.”

“Sounds great.”

“I'll call you later, okay?” he said.

“Okay. I may go for a run after work, but I'll be home after that.”

He lowered his voice. “Try to get some work done, Miss Bennet.”

She grinned. “You too, Mr. Darcy.”
