“Will can handle what?” he asked, and shook his damp hair as he walked into the living room and went to join Elizabeth on the couch.

“Um...I'll tell you at dinner,” Georgie answered. “Where are we going, anyway?”

He grinned. “Ladies’ choice.”

* * *

Georgiana and Elizabethchose the pub again, and about halfway through dinner, Georgiana cleared her throat and looked at Will. “So I wanted to talk to you about something. Um, two things, actually.”

Will glanced at Georgiana, then at Elizabeth, and then at his sister again. “Does it have anything to do with what I overheard earlier?”

He’d been biding his time during dinner, waiting for her to bring up whatever it was they’d been discussing at home, and wasn’t sure if he should be worried or not.

“Yes,” Georgiana answered. “I decided to leave my job with the Boston school system for good. I'm looking for work here, on the Cape. I had an interview in Falmouth today, and I have another in Mashpee next week.”

He smiled, feeling relieved. “That's great, Georgie! How did your interview go today?”

“I think it went well. I guess we'll see. Um, there’s something else.” Georgiana paused. “I’d like to move into the guesthouse.”

He frowned. “What? What are you talking about? That's crazy, you're not doing that.”

Georgiana and Elizabeth looked at each other, eyebrows raised.

“What do you mean, I'm not doing that?” Georgiana asked.

“There's no reason for it.”

“Thereisa reason for it. I want my own space. I know moving across the backyard isn’t a big deal, but it’s something. And you'll have the house to yourself,” she said pointedly, and then smiled sweetly at Elizabeth. “I’m going to the ladies’ room. Will you talk some sense into him?”

Georgiana left the table, and Will turned to glare at his girlfriend. “Are you in on this?”

Elizabeth’s mouth dropped open, and she laughed. “What? No, I'm notin on this. This was all Georgie’s idea.”

“What do you think about it?”

“It doesn't matter. I'm neutral.”

“You? Neutral? You have an opinion oneverything.”

She elbowed him. “Watch yourself, Mr. Darcy.”

He continued to stare, waiting for her answer, and she threw up her hands.

“Okay, fine. I think it's a great idea. She wants a place of her own again. She’s ready to take that next step.”

“I know. And I know she's an adult, and doesn’t need my permission. I can’t stop her.” He sighed. “But after everything she's been through…it's hard.”

“I know. But at least she’ll be nearby.”

He nodded, and glanced up as Georgiana made her way back to the table. Elizabeth was right; this was a big step for his sister in regaining her independence. Still, he had some reservations, mostly about security and her safety.

“You'll have to agree to a few things first,” he said as Georgiana sat down.

She frowned. “Like what?”

“I want to install a security system. Motion sensor lights. New locks. Maybe even Bluetooth intercoms between the two houses.”

Georgiana rolled her eyes. “Intercoms?”
