“Because this has ‘major problem’ written all over it! Don’t you see what this could lead to?” Will sighed heavily, wondering if his cousin was being purposely obtuse. How did henotsee the position he’d put the company in? Or the consequences that could befall RJD if his relationship with Lauren went south?

“Look, you'll meet her Saturday and find out for yourself what she's like,” Richard said. “Just give her a chance before you hang her, okay?”

Will shook his head. “But youdorealize how it looks, don't you? You must see it.”

“We both do. But no one here has any idea we’re dating. We've never behaved inappropriately.”

“Unless you're in the hall together. And I'm sure it's not because you haven't tried.”

“The hall thing was a slip, but even you can't say anything happened. You're just good at reading body language.”

Will gave a curt laugh. “I'm good at readingyou. At least I thought I was. So, you've been dating her—justher—since before she started at RJD?”

“That's right. Since January.”

Will's eyebrows rose. “Wow, six months. That's so...monogamous of you.”

Richard chuckled. “Look, I could say the same about you. That last day you were out here, you were pathetic.”

“I know, but my gut was right. Between Anne answering my phone and Caroline sinking her claws into Elizabeth, everything was a mess.”

“Caroline? When is she going to give up on you?” Richard paused. “Please tell me she isn't sitting with us at the benefit.”

“Not anymore. I don't even know if she's going. Part of me hopes she isn’t so I don't have to deal with her, but part of me hopes she is so I can tell her off.”

“Another thing I'd love to see.”

“When are you flying in?”

“Friday night. We're staying at the Long Wharf.”

“Great.” Will paused. “Listen, I'm sorry about what I said, but I'll be honest: I’m not comfortable with this. At all. You have to be discreet; I can’t have rumors circulating about an office romance between the boss and his assistant. You know that as well as I do.”

“Idoknow that, and Lauren does too. You don't have anything to worry about, okay? Trust me.”

“I do, Richard. Just play it smart. Safe travels, okay? Get in touch with me Friday when you land. I'll be in Boston by then.”

“Sounds good. Talk to you soon.”

Will sat back, once again tapping his pen on his desk. He still couldn’t believe his cousin had been in a relationship for over six months.

I hope this doesn't blow up in his face. Or mine.
