A new song came on, and the woman pulled Elizabeth out onto the dancefloor. Others joined them, and when he finally realized what song was playing—a remake of “I Will Survive”—his stomach lurched. He watched as she sang the lyrics—along with nearly everyone else in the bar.

An idea came to him then, and he sought out the bar manager. After a brief conversation, Will was led backstage to where the band was hanging out, tuning their guitars and having a beer before going on stage, and he smiled and pulled out his wallet.

“Anyone interested in making some cash?”

Elizabethand her friends settled at a table toward the back of the bar. Jason hadn’t shown up, and she wasn’t sorry about it; the less time she spent with him, the happier she was.

They’d had fun so far, dancing and having a few drinks. The jukebox was turned off as the band was about to start, but it was noisy. Her phone vibrated in her pocket, and when she glanced at it, her heart lurched.A text from Will. Feeling slightly buzzed, her curiosity got the best of her and she opened it.

There was no message, only a picture of the nighttime sky, and she frowned, trying to decipher its meaning. They’d done plenty of stargazing, but she couldn't recall anything significant happening on any of those nights. She became lost in her thoughts, trying to puzzle it out, and didn't even realize Marie was talking to her.

“What?” Elizabeth asked, still not really paying attention.

“I said, I have no idea who this guy is. Maybe they have an opening act or something.”

Elizabeth continued to stare at her phone. The crowd had fallen silent as the soft sounds of an acoustic guitar came from the stage, but she remained focused on the picture, searching her memories for something that would make it meaningful.

It wasn't until she heard the singer’s voice that she looked up, and her eyes widened at the sight of Will sitting on a barstool casually playing the guitar. She could do nothing but sit and stare, her entire body humming at the sound of his voice soulfully singing aboutnot giving up on us.

The crowd burst into applause at the end of the song, and immediately Will was on his feet, handing the guitar to someone and shaking his hand. He looked out into the crowd, and his eyes skimmed over everyone until they settled on Elizabeth.

“Wow, he was great, huh? What a beautiful song,” Marie said.

Elizabeth ignored her; she needed tomove, had to get out of that bar. But when she stood, everything tilted, and Marie grasped her arm.

“Hey, are you okay?”

Elizabeth shook her head, alarmed that Will was steadily making his way toward them, until someone in the crowd stopped him to talk.

“No, I have to–I have to leave,” Elizabeth responded breathlessly. “I can’t believe this, I can't believe he's here. I have to go.” She steadied herself, pulled out of Marie’s grasp, and pushed away from the table.

“You can't believewhois here?” Marie asked, looking over the crowd; and then her mouth dropped open. “Wait, is that the guy? Holy shit, that's him, isn't it?”

But when she turned back, Elizabeth was already gone.
