Clay’s eyebrows shot up. “Really?”

I shrugged. “I finished the attic renovations. Easy enough to stick a bed in there.”

He popped the last of the bacon in his mouth. “It would help us out a lot. If another damn box comes for the wedding, I’m going to need to rent a freaking storage unit.”

“We didn’t even put much on the registry.”

Clay gave her sidelong look, but he didn’t comment.

I grinned behind the lip of my mug.

Clay made a lot of concessions for his woman. It was interesting to see my formerly uptight best friend bend like a damn reed for her. But he did—gladly. Which was even more of a surprise.

Another reason I’d made sure I had my own space from them. I didn’t like to bend. And while I was willing to do a lot for them, it gave me a place for peace.

There was nothing peaceful about Rachel and the schemes she was always dragging Clay into.

However, she did have a particularly amazing talent with coffee. I took another long swallow of the brew that only seemed to come from her magic pot. Even when she sent me home with the same beans, mine never tasted the same.

Rachel set a shallow bowl full of eggs, bacon, and perfectly fried sausage in front of me.

Her culinary skills had also improved.

I lifted a fork and dug in as the natural flow of their morning rituals went on around me. Teasing, laughter, the lingering touches and looks that I tried to ignore.

Clay was happy and if part of me attempted to long for the same, I locked it down. I liked my quiet. Access to a warm and willing female body had its moments, but in the end, I got itchy to be alone.

“Rach, you’re killing me with the bacon. I barely managed to make myself get dressed before running down here…oh. Hi.”

Chaos, with freshly washed hair and a pair of tight black jeans that showed every line of her mile-long legs, entered the kitchen like a breath of summer.

The sun streaming through their kitchen highlighted the gold threaded in the dark red of her wet hair. She wore a black tank which was dotted with water from her heavy, still dripping hair.

“I didn’t know you were coming by so soon.”

I finished chewing and managed to swallow the once delicious breakfast that now tasted like sawdust. Maybe I needed to go down to see Roth on my own.

I wasn’t sure I could manage a trip into the city with her.

“Soon?” Rachel turned with a pair of tongs in her hand.

Willow shot a panicked look at me.

While it would probably kill me to have her in my house, subterfuge was definitely not one of Chaos’s talents.

“We worked on your surprise late. I told Chaos it would take some time to dry.”

“Oh.” Rachel’s eyes brightened. “Still no hints?”

“Nope.”

She pointed the tongs at me. “You suck.”

I picked up a piece of bacon and popped it in my mouth. Thankfully, it was back to delicious.

Willow peeked over her sister’s shoulder. They did this little dance that told me it was a common occurrence as she crowded into Rachel, reaching around for a piece of bacon. “Hey, I just want one.”

Rach elbowed her back. “Go sit down. I’ll feed you for once.”
