Chaos managed to filch one out of my bowl instead before going around the counter. Her fresh lemon scent hit me, making my mouth water.

She bumped her arm with mine as she climbed on the stool, using it to distract as she went for another bit of bacon.

Sneaky minx.“Do you mind?”

She shrugged. “You can have one of mine when my slowpoke sister gives me some.” She crunched through the end. “Maybe.”

I hunched around my bowl, blocking her from more thievery.

“What are you doing here? Did you find something out?” she asked in a Willow whisper—meaning not at all.

“After breakfast,” I muttered.

She nodded.

“Find something out about what?”

Willow’s head whipped toward her sister. Rach stood in front of her with a bowl.

“Surprise.” Willow took it with a cheery grin.

Okay, maybe she wasn’t so bad at it.

Rachel wrinkled her nose at her sister and for the first time, I was struck by something they did alike. The two women were very different, but in that moment, they were mirrors.

Willow held up a single piece of bacon. “Here.”

I leaned forward and snapped it out of her grip with my teeth.

Startled, she locked those big hazel eyes on me. I didn’t know what had gotten into me. Must’ve been sleep deprivation.

I went back to my breakfast as conversation hummed around me. I’d been forming a plan on how to get her out of Turnbull to see Roth, but the longer I sat next to her, the more I wondered if I should make it a solo visit.

“Ransom offered up his attic for your stay.”

Willow looked up at Clay, then toward me. “Really?”

I shrugged. “It’s only a few weeks.”

“About that.”

My fork stilled over the remnants of my eggs.

Rachel slapped her hands on the counter, a wide smile in place. “Are you moving back?”

Willow put her fork down and twisted her hands in her lap. “Things have gotten a little tense with my roommates.”

My shoulders tightened.Howtense?

“Oh, Wil. I don’t know how you did that whole sorority house setup for so long.”

Willow looked at her hands. “I like being in the city.”

“But you’re so busy, you hardly go out exploring down there anymore anyway.”

“I know.” She flattened her hands on her thighs, rubbing up and down before digging the tips of her fingers into the denim.

Without thought, I covered her hand. She froze for a moment before flipping over one of her hands to grip mine before she released it and went back to her bowl.
