Phone Thief

I resisted the urge to go into the cubicles and ask questions. Curiosity was the bane of my existence.

Instead I went right to the elevators. I could feel Ransom behind me. His gaze felt as heavy as the wool blanket my Aunt Laverne had made me.

What had they been talking about in that room?

Could it truly be any scarier than the details I’d stared at on that massive screen in the conference room? My entire life had been rolled out as if some cosmic god had stuck his damn finger on me. Like a bug.

The involuntary shiver hit me just as Ransom came up to meet me.

“Cold?”

I shrugged. “More like the heebs.”

“Aidan and Marcus will figure out how this asshat is getting his information.”

“And you?”

I didn’t look at him as I asked. Would he run far and fast? Leave me to figure it out on my own? Rescind his offer for his attic space?

Dump me at my apartment with a pair of deuces to the sky?

I tunneled my fingers into the sleeves of my sweater, hiding my trembling hands from his prying eyes.

“I’m not letting you out of my sight.”

My gaze swung up to crash into his flat gray eyes. “I couldn’t impose like that.”

“There’s no imposing. You’re not staying alone. Anywhere.”

“Anywhere?” I stepped in front of him, staring up at him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means until we know what we’re dealing with, you’ve got yourself a new roommate. Or rather, I do. Any shopping you need to do, we’ll do it together. Luckily, the wedding stuff we both need to do, anyway. I’ll just be more hands on until the big day.”

That was probably the most words I’d ever heard tumble out from his firm, very distracting lips. Right now, his mouth was mostly just an annoying pie-hole.

“It’s not that serious.”

He leaned down until our noses practically touched. “What part of that video feed did you not catch?”

“He was a creep and hacked into someone’s security cameras. It won’t happen at your place.”

“It won’t happen because I’ll be on the lookout. And I’ll be on your ass like a fucking barnacle. Where you go, I go.”

The elevator doors opened behind me, startling me forward. My chest brushed his, making me stumble back into the car. “What did you and Aidan talk about? Was there more?”

“Wasn’t all that enough?” He stalked forward, matching my steps like we were doing some choreographed dance.

My back bumped into the rail along the perimeter of the elevator. He didn’t stop. He invaded my space until his thigh slid between my legs.

“This is how easy it is for someone to get into your space. Do you get that? You are fucking defenseless. Your big eyes widening, your breath catching. Absolutely no protective instincts.”

I pushed at him, but he didn’t budge. “Because I trust you.”

“Why?”
