A blue Fenrir tackled the lead truck, forcing it to spin out. Before the driver could get control, the airborne vehicle dropped, crushing the roof, blowing out the windshield, and snapping the axle.

One blue and the silver wolf fell in behind the M-ATV where Luca was while the other two betas gutted an M-ATV laying on its side.

One of the gunmen ripped off his hood. Light skin, pale eyes, and red hair. He was either younger than he looked or no older than Luca. “I didn’t sign up for this.” He watched out the window with a look of horror while the blue and silver Fenrir closed in. He turned. The whites of his eyes showed, and spit flecked his lips. “You said this was fucking extraction. In and out. No one said a mother fucking thing about this. Goddamn it, this isn’t what I signed on for. This—”

The man with black eyes stuck a knife in the redhead’s throat. He pawed at the blade and the man twisted his wrist. The redhead collapsed, twitching on the floor.

The third M-ATV swerved to avoid one of the blue betas as it attacked.

“Let me go,” Luca said. “Let me go and I’ll tell them not to hurt you.”

“You better tell them to run because they’re all about to die.” He grabbed Luca by the head of hair, dragged him over the dead man, and mashed his cheek against the glass. “You see that.” He tightened his grip and Luca bit back a yell. “Look, you fucker, look out there.”

Luca did.

“You see now?”

Numerous trailers sat in the distance. Intermittent openings lined the tops. Half had ramps at the rear.

Luca had stayed almost a week in a horse trailer of a similar design and a fraction of the size.

“They’ve whipped up something real special.” The man’s breath blew hot against Luca’s ear. “Homemade like mama’s beef stew. Nasty fuckers.” Closer and the fabric of his mask, rubbed Luca’s cheek. “Your Fenrir don’t stand a chance.”

Black forms spilled out of the open doors, moving en masse. Wolf-shaped creatures, some with twisted limbs and hunched backs, that dwarfed the M-ATVs and the Fenrir in pursuit.

Men in the M-ATV shouted. Shots rang out. But Luca couldn’t peel his eyes from the animals exiting the livestock trailers.

The mutant wolves charged.

The man with black eyes hummed. “Here they come.”

Ghostly colorless wolves snapped their jaws only to pass through them.

“Hard for a wolf to bite when they’re made of nothing.”

“You can see them?”

Luca rolled a look up at the gunman who had his face against the glass.

“Of course I see them, Mr. Suarez.”

Men screamed at the rear of the truck.

Seung’s silver Fenrir appeared in the rear window of the M-ATV. Wicked claws punched through the metal. Gouges carved gaps in the roof.

“Watch, Luca.” The man forced Luca to turn his head. “Nothing will be as glorious as this.” His breath shuddered. “The only thing I regret is not getting to see humanity walk the road of perdition.”

“What are you talking about?”

Metal popped and a rush of wind swept through the M-ATV.

A beta shredded the passenger door. Another tore off the one on the driver’s side. The man behind the wheel disappeared into its jaws, and a human form emerged from the blue wolf on the passenger side.

He took the driver’s seat.

At the same moment, the rear door was ripped from its frame, and Seung’s wolf filled the back.

The man with the black eyes stood.
