“I already know, Earl. I have the travel plans set. Or…or Mars does. I’m, uh, getting an assistant. That way, Mars can be home, taking care of things.”

“Good idea. I’ve got three and still can’t keep track of all my appointments.” Earl leaned over his large desk, shining in the light of the tiffany lamp. “How’s your grandfather? I sure miss that old goat.”

“He’s loving retirement. He and my parents are heading to the Cape tonight for an extended weekend. I’m stuck with the wedding.”

“Oh, right! Julia and her beau. Good man, that Harvey. Comes from old money. They’re a good match.”

Chuckling blandly, Lee asked, “Would she be allowed to marry him if he wasn’t?”

“Good point.” Earl pulled out a folder from his center drawer and slid it over to him. “Here’s the points we hit this week. I’m going to stop sending them through the mail or email. If we have to, I’ll hand them all out personally.”

The former few years, everyone and their most distant uncle had tried to hack into all their emails, and had come out victorious a few times, leaking things to the media. Earl had become positively paranoid.

“Good thinking. We get another leak, and we lose more donors.”

“We have the foundations and the big donors, but the smaller ones, we need them, too. Anyway, Lee, how’s it going in the other committees?”

He laid it all out for him, giving him the ins and outs of all the voting in his other committees, then he gave Earl his assurance he’d vote like the rest of his party on the big-ticket bills.

When he left the capitol, he called Mars. “I’m heading to my luncheon, but I wanted to check on the progress of getting the new assistant.”

“I sent the email, sir. When he checks it, I’m sure we’ll get a reply.”

“Good,” he said, smiling. “You need a raise, Mars. Too bad I’m a cheapskate.”

“Yes, sir. Too bad, sir.”
