“She’s not who I thought she was.”

“Really? Because I think she could use that reasoning with you too if she knew that you found out and how.”

“It’s not the same. I’m still who I always was. It’s just a job that she doesn’t know about. Not even all my job but some of it.”

“She’s still the same person she has been. The only thing that is different is her name. Remember that before you make any accusations.”

“I don’t need the advice of a dead man.”

“Ouch,” Rob said. “That hurt. If I could feel anything. I can’t. But I can tell you to grow up and get a grip. That’s what I’m doing. Trust me, you’ll wish you listened to me.”

Rob left before he could argue back.

A Double Life

Vivian went to Brent’s house on Saturday night the following week.

He’d been coming to hers lately and she felt bad since they were tight in her bed. She was considering a king sized to make it easier but hadn’t told him yet.

“Hey,” she said when she walked in the front door. Sammie greeted her at the door like she always did, her front paws down, her butt in the air waggling. She’d grown into her body more than Vivian thought she would. Long gone was the puppy that was tripping over her own feet in the beginning.

Brent was sitting on the couch looking at her. No smile on his face. Nothing.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Just looking at you,” he said.

“Okay,” she said. There was a part of her that was a little nervous that he’d fixed her computer without her knowing. But she could see where he thought she wouldn’t care when she looked back.

It’s not like she didn’t trust him. Sure, he could see her search history if he wanted and she had it all planned out that she was going to say she was a closet gossip follower.

He’d never said a word about it though. Only that she had a virus and fixed it.

“Sit down,” he said. “We need to talk.”

She wasn’t sure what was going on. She knew the anniversary of Rob’s death was in a week so maybe he was having a hard time.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

“Why don’t you tell me?” he asked.

“I’m not sure what you mean.”

“How about this, Alexa?” he asked.

She stood up and backed up a few steps. “What did you call me?”

“You heard me. Alexa VioletCarmichael.”

She was shaking her head. There was no denying this. The bigger question was how he found out. “There is no way you could know this,” she said. “It’s been buried. I’ve been assured no one could ever find out. Alexa vanished thirteen years ago.”

“Yeah, she’s in Paris from what I could find. That is what people were supposed to see. Of course there is no activity on her social security card, so technically, she doesn’t exist anymore. Though she’s standing here right in front of me. Are you in danger? I need to know.”

She couldn’t wrap her brain around this. He was pissed, she could see it. She was more so. There was no fear, not thathefound out. But if he did, could someone else?

“No,” she said. “Though no one would be able to know what you do other than my lawyer and my grandfather’s lawyer. I don’t even know how they did it, but they had government help.” She stopped. “You’re not an analyst are you?”
