Logan stood. “Sounds good. See you Monday.”

“Hey, wait up for me, will you?” Alex said. “I’ll walk you out, but I want to speak to Jeff first.”

Logan stared at her for a few seconds before saying, “Sure. I’ll be at my desk.”

After Logan left the office, Alex fixed her gaze on Jeff. “What’s going on?”

He stared at her blankly. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“Yes, you do. Something’s wrong with Logan, and I want to know what it is.”

Jeff looked away for several seconds, then said, “I can’t tell you. It has to come from him.” He met her eyes. “I mean this, Alex. I won’t change my mind no matter what you say. Talk to him, but don’t badger him. He needs to handle this his way. Please allow him to do that.”

Alex got to her feet. She had no intention of pushing Jeff any further. It was obvious he wouldn’t bend. But her concern had now turned into a cold fear that made her chest feel tight.

She walked out of Jeff’s office without saying another word, passing Alice without acknowledging her. Her mind felt locked up by one thought. Logan was in trouble. Real trouble. She believed God had told her to help him, but how could she do that if no one would tell her what was going on?

She found Logan waiting near his desk. “Ready to go?” he asked.

She nodded wordlessly, then grabbed her things and started following him to the front entrance. But she suddenly stopped and watched him as he walked a few feet away before turning back to frown at her.

“Forget something?” he asked.

“No, I don’t think so. But I believe you did.”

His frown deepened. “I’m sorry. I don’t understand.”

“You forgot we’re friends. You forgot everything we’ve been through together. And it seems you also forgot how many times I opened up to you and talked about things I’ve never discussed with anyone else. You forgot all of that.”

She could feel the tears on her cheeks, but she couldn’t stop them. It was as if they had a mind of their own.

Logan stared at her for a moment before walking back to where she stood. Todd Hunter and Robin Wallace passed them on their way out the door. Todd hesitated for a moment before Robin grabbed his arm and gently guided him outside. Alex was grateful she’d realized they didn’t need any interruptions.

Logan stared at her silently before saying, “I’m sorry. I guess I also forgot that it’s almost impossible to hide anything from you. Can we do this somewhere else?”

She nodded. “Your place.”

“Okay. Wait for me there. I’ll grab some food from somewhere first. What do you want?”

“I couldn’t care less.”

Logan smiled. “Well, that narrows it down.”

Alex knew he was trying to lighten things up, but there wasn’t any space inside her to accept that. Instead, she headed for her car. When she got inside, she put her head on the steering wheel and tried to rein in the emotions that surged through her. She couldn’t help Logan if she failed to get control of herself. But she knew things were about to change ... and not for the better.
