“We need to eat this food before it gets cold,” she said in almost a whisper.

For a moment he stayed where he was, but then he returned to his chair. “You’re right,” he said.

When she glanced at him, she noticed the hurt in his expression. That was the last thing she wanted to see, but what could she do about it? Right now she could only cry out to God and beg Him to save Logan. She wanted to ask if they could pray together over his upcoming surgery, but she couldn’t get the words out. She knew she’d break down if she said anything at all.

They ate in silence for several minutes before Logan said, “I’m not rushing you, you know. No pressure. Ever.”

In that moment, she knew what he was trying to say, and she wanted to tell him she felt the same way. But she couldn’t. Instead, she took a deep breath and choked out, “I’ve lost everyone important to me. I just can’t...” She couldn’t finish, but she didn’t need to. She saw instant recognition in his face.

“I get it. No matter what, I’ll always be here for you, Alex. I’m not going anywhere.”

Could he really promise that? She didn’t know the answer, but his words comforted her. And feeling a little better, she took a bite of an enchilada.
