“Understanding people like this guy is what I do. You can trust me.” Although she wanted to calm the women and give them hope, Alex wasn’t as confident as she sounded.

“We’re all counting on you,” Merrie said. “We don’t know who will be . . . released next.”

“I know. We’ll all get out of here.”

“Do you pray, Alex?” Tracy asked.

“Yes, I do.”

“Will you pray for us? Now, I mean?”

Alex wasn’t used to praying out loud in a group, but she did as Tracy asked. She asked God to protect them and get them all home safe. She also asked for wisdom to know what to do and how to help the women trapped here. As she prayed, she heard sobbing. Then when she finished, she closed the small metal door, sank to the floor, and cried as well. The darkness from the warehouse still swirled around inside her, grabbing at her mind when she least expected it. It was like being on one of those rides, like the one she’d walked into almost twenty-four hours ago. The monsters jumped out at you when you least expected it, and even though you knew they were there, each time it happened you couldn’t help but scream in fear.

And now she was about to walk into another nightmare. Try to triumph over another man full of evil intentions. Was she too damaged to do it? She felt crushed under the weight of the responsibility to save these women.

God, I can’t do this alone. I’m not strong enough. If you don’t help me, this won’t work, and these women will die. Please, God. You’re our only hope.
