Logan tried to rest, but he couldn’t stop thinking about Alex. Finally, he picked up the phone and called Monty, thankful it had a voice feature since he still couldn’t see well enough to read his contacts list.

“Hey, how’s it going?” Monty said when he answered.

“I’m fine, but I’ve been thinking about the UNSUB. Did you see the final profile?

“Yes, but why?”

“They’ve got to check out the UNSUB’s connection to amusement parks. Especially the one in Ashville. It means something to him. It might help them figure out where he is now.”

“Yeah, they know that. I understand someone’s come forward. Someone who might have known the UNSUB. He was a carnie and used to work special events at Magic Land Park. I don’t have all the details, but I believe they have a first name. Now they’re researching people connected to that park, including the carnies. Problem is most of them were paid in cash. No way to trace them.”

“Okay. Please keep me updated?”

“Seriously, Logan, you have to concentrate on your recovery. If you can’t do it for yourself, think of Alex. If she thought you weren’t improving because you’re worrying about her...”

“Yeah, I know. But right now getting her back is all that matters to me. She can be as mad at me as she wants as long as she makes it out of this alive.” He sighed. “Monty, I can’t help but think about how much she’s been through. How much more can she take?”

“You introduced her to the One who can keep her safe. She has hope because of you. Now you have to let God be God.”

“Not the first time you’ve reminded me of that.”

“Then how about listening to me this time? Pray for her, brother. Let God do His thing. You’re in bed, recovering from surgery and...”

“And blindness?”

“I wasn’t going to say that.”

“I know, but like I said, my sight’s getting better and better. I truly believe I’ll get it all back.”

“I’ll believe that with you. And I also believe Alex is coming home—and she won’t be alone.”

When had Monty gotten so full of faith? But he was right. Alex needed him to pray, not worry. He was determined to do better.

“Hey, bro, thanks. You make me feel ashamed. I just ... well . . .”

“Why don’t you just say it?” Monty said. “You love her. That’s not anything to be embarrassed about, you know.”

“You’re right. And I intend to. But stepping out on that limb when I don’t know how she feels is a little scary. It could break, you know. It’s a long way down if that happens.”

“Just jump off the limb, Logan. As far as I’m concerned you should have done it a long time ago.”

“I agree. Hey, Monty, thanks again for everything. And—”

“Yeah, I know. Keep you informed.”

“Okay. Talk to you soon.”

He was moved by Monty’s faith. Logan had been praying, but it was time for him to start praying differently. Not pleading for God to save Alex. Praying in faith. Thanking God for taking care of her. What was that Scripture in Psalm 91? He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation. He realized that the Scripture not only applied to Alex; it fit his situation too.

I’m taking you at your word, Lord. Alex will call on you, and you will answer her. You will be with her in trouble, and you will deliver her. With long life you will satisfy her and show her your salvation. And that applies to me too. As soon as he finished praying, a deep peace settled over him.

Logan quietly wept with joy and relief. It felt good to get the worry off his back. To know that getting Alex home rested on someone stronger than him or anything he could do. It gave him hope. And that was even more powerful than the profile he and Alex had worked on. If God gave Logan something to do, that was one thing. But otherwise, he just had to trust God and believe He had the situation in His mighty hands.

He grabbed a tissue from the beside table and wiped his eyes. Crying was getting to be a habit. One he wasn’t really comfortable with. He chuckled to himself as he dried his eyes. His dad used to tell him it was okay for men to cry, but Logan grew up watching movies with strong men who never wept. Turns out his dad was right. He intended to tell him that the next time he saw him. Once he could travel, he’d go home for a visit. He missed his family.

For some reason, he had a hard time getting his eyes dry, as if they were draining. He wiped them several times until finally the tears were gone. When he looked around, he started crying again.
