“You too.”

He smiles, then takes off out of the kitchen.

Cal growls low in his throat.

“He did say he’ll think about it.”

“Yeah, when Ax says that, it means he ain’t gonna.”

“Give him some time to calm down, then broach the subject again.”

Cal smiles and takes my hand, easing me off the stool. “Time to get some sleep. You think you can now that you’ve had it out with Ax?”

“I’ll give it a shot.”

“Good.” He wraps his arm around me and walks us out of the kitchen. “I weren’t down with waking up and finding you gone.”

“Aww, really?” I tease.

But he isn’t having any of it, not allowing me to downplay his confession or minimize it as a mere off-the-cuff comment.

His eyes burn into mine and he tightens his hold around me. “Yeah, really, Charlotte.”

I nod, getting it. “Then I’ll try to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

“Yeah?”

“I swear it, Cal.”

He looks a little taken aback by that.

It’s because he knows my word is solid. I don’t go back on something once I’ve given my promise.

He deserves it after giving me everything since we came back into each other’s lives. He hasn’t held back at all.

The least I can do is offer him the same.

He needs to know that I’m really not going anywhere once all of this is over. It’s clear he didn’t overhear the part of mine and Ax’s conversation where I talked about getting out of the whole Kingmaker way of life. And now isn’t the right time to have that discussion, because I know it won’t be an easy one. Besides, I haven’t even begun to work out all the details of doing that yet.

Regardless, when our mission against Priest is said and done, I’ll still be standing here, right by his side.

It’s how it always should have been.
