“I admire your loyalty to him,” I tell him, walking to him.

That wary look is back and I can tell he’s uncomfortable the closer I get to him. He’s doing his best to hide it and he’s good. But I notice a hell of a lot more than most. He knows how dangerous I am, even to somebody as hardened as him.

“We protect each other, no matter what.”

“That’s coming through loud and clear,” I say, stopping right in front of him. “You also trust his judgment without question. Even when you shouldn’t.”

He tenses.

“And that’s a problem right now.” My eyes flash. “One that needs to be rectified.”

In the next beat, I dig my fingers into his shoulder, use it as leverage to spin him around, then sweep my leg at the backs on his legs, forcing him down to his knees. Not giving him any space to react, I hook my arm around him, trapping him in a sleeper hold.

He struggles, his hands coming up, trying to pry my arm off him.

The burn from his nails and hefty rings scoring deep into my flesh just intensifies my determination.

In the next moment, his fight dissipates.

And then he’s completely out.

I release him and watch as he crumples to the floor, unconscious.

“Sleep tight.” I step back and head back to my closet, kicking my duffel bag back inside.

Did he really think I actually needed to pack?

I’m always ready to go at a moment’s notice.

I just needed to buy a little time until he felt safe enough to drop his guard.

Killing somebody is easier than putting them down temporarily without doing any significant or permanent damage. I didn’t want to go the former route, given that he’s loyal to Cal, and an important person in his life. I can’t hurt him like that.

I rip open the floor-to-ceiling cabinet at the left of my closet, revealing the safe inside. Rapidly tapping in the eight-digit access code, I wait for the definitive chirp, than haul it open. Inside, my go-bag is all set and ready for me. Essential clothing, money, credit cards and IDs for two aliases, weapons, burner phones, a laptop, the whole nine.

I snatch it up, seal the safe again, then haul it over my shoulder, stepping around Sin’s unconscious form on my way out.

Time to get to work.
