“Again, you’re overestimating the whole choice aspect.”

“Given your intentions for the Hounds of Fury contract, it would have him crossing Black Thorns, something he’ll never do. That club is his family.”

“Black Thorns will be protected.”

“And the clubs it’s allied with?”

“Not my problem. Dealer and his son-in-law, Ax, have struggled and fought to reposition Black Thorns and shake the shackles of its dark legacy. I’m offering him the ability to do that, something that no alliance can accomplish in its stead. I can free Black Thorns and guarantee the club’s safety for all time.” He crosses his legs and releases a satisfied sigh. “And even if that somehow fails, there’s also the issue of what will befall the love of his life if he refuses such a reasonable partnership. The very same thing that I’ve already warned you about, if you refuse me.”

“Like I said, you’re overestimating the connection between us.”

“Years apart may have strained it, but it’s still there. Dealer has had three women he’s allowed himself to love. Two are long gone, buried in the ground. You’re the only one left standing. Do you really think he’d risk that, that he could live with himself? That total failure would break him.”

The bastard really has looked into the both of us. The detail of it is incredibly unsettling. It’s like having a raw nerve exposed.

“So, don’t worry your pretty little head,” he says, with a self-satisfied smirk that I long to tear right off his face. “He’ll come to me. I have no doubt.”

Before I can get a word out, a buzzing sounds.

He reaches into the inner pocket of his suit jacket and withdraws it, his eyes lighting up as he takes in the call display.

Rising to his feet and keeping his eyes on me, he answers, “Ah, Dealer, I’ve been expecting your call. She’s fine, unharmed. She won’t be leaving here until we arrange a meet though. What do you say?”

He listens for a moment, nodding to himself, before responding again, “Excellent. Smart decision. I’ll be seeing you.”

He hangs up and slides his phone back into his pocket.

“Let the games begin.”
