She frowns, not getting it.

“With you. All right? I don’t trust myself with you, woman!”

She looks hella surprised. Ain’t sure if it’s the fact that I actually put that confession out there, or the words themselves. Guess it don’t matter, just matters that it’s out there.

It has her softening.

She blows out a breath and runs her fingers through her hair, trying to bite back her emotion, as she admits, “You aren’t the only one.”

“Yeah?”

A smile ghosts her lips, but it’s laced with pain. “Yeah.”

“Denying it and shutting it down has gotten us nowhere. Not in the past. Not now. Maybe it’s time we did something about that, yeah?”

“What does that mean?”

I cross to her and take a seat beside her on the couch. “We’re stuck in this safehouse for the next little while. Instead of looking at it as a hardship and being trapped, let’s see it as an opportunity, the chance we were never given.”

“You want us to… reconnect?”

I nod. “See what’s still there.”

I watch her process my proposal, weighing it all up the way she always does with a crazy amount of depth and detail.

“I don’t know, Cal. Hope is a dangerous thing for people like us.”

“Sometimes it’s all people like us have got.”

Our eyes lock.

A smile breaks out over her face. “You argumentative shit.”

“Pot. Kettle.”

“Okay.”

“You’re game?”

“I’m game.”

Here goes nothing.
