“I hate to do this, but the past few weeks have been difficult, and I just found out someone close to me died. I wanted to talk to you about staying on a little longer as CEO. You can take the title back or you can work informally. I need to get my life and all the shit happening sorted before I can fully take on the role. I’m not at my best right now. I’ll still be working when I can but to commit to the CEO position right now is too difficult,” I tell him and watch as he takes it all in.

“Are you sure this is what you want?” he asks, and I nod my head.

“Sure, I’ll stay on and help you with things. The wife was getting tired of me being home anyway,” he says chuckling. “I don’t want the official title back. I’ll just be here until you feel ready to fully take over again.”

“Thank you. This means the world to me,” I say before standing and walking away. I go back into my office and sit there lost in space. I couldn’t focus even if I wanted to. I thought today was going to be a good day, but it turned to shit really fast. Before I know it, two p.m. rolls around and there’s a knock on my door. I’m surprised when Antonio steps through the door. Shit has been so busy as of late, I forgot about him too.

“Hello, cara,” he says as he takes a seat in front of my desk. “I’m told you’re in need of a bodyguard.”

“How did you—” I started.

“Your assistant contacted me. Apart from our previous business together, I also have others, a security firm being one of them,” he says.

“Oh,” is all I can manage to say.

“How about I take you to dinner tomorrow night and we can discuss business there. I haven’t seen you in a while, cara,” he says, and I feel a bit guilty for that too.

“Sure. I’d love to,” I tell him. He shakes his head and stands to leave.

“Great, I’ll see you tomorrow. I’ll text you the details later tonight.” And with that, he’s out the door.

I let out a sigh and then call Chase to let him know that I’m done for the day and for him to take any important calls.

I head through the side door that leads to the connected apartment. As soon as I make it to the room, I strip my clothes and crawl into bed where I cry myself to sleep, thinking about how awful it is to lose someone so close to me yet again.
