“You’re right and again I’m sorry,” I say because that’s the only thing I can do—apologize because I was in the wrong.

“Apology accepted. Now, are we going to talk about us or are you going to keep skirting around the topic?” he asks, and I groan. Today is not the day that I wanted to have a heart-to-heart.

“I’m sorry for leading you on but I have a lot to deal with right now. I’m sure you’ve seen the news and seen everything that the company is being accused of. I’m going to have to take a step back from things, and that includes us. It was never my intention to—” I get cut off from my explanation when the door to my office opens without so much as a knock.

“Babe, I heard about what hap—” Mason starts and then cuts himself off when he notices Antonio sitting in the chair across from me.

“Not now, Mason!” I snap through gritted teeth.

“I see—” Antonio says before getting up from his seat.

“Wait! It’s not—” I try but he just cuts me off as well. Today really isn’t my day at all.

“I’ll see you when we have business to conduct,” Antonio tells me before walking out of my office. Mason bumps shoulders with him when he passes, and I want to slap him for his childishness.

“Was that really fucking necessary?” I snap at him as soon as Antonio is out my door.

“Yes, it was. Why the hell was he here? I told you to stay away from that asshole!” he says through gritted teeth, as though he has a right to be angry when he doesn’t.

“From what I can see, you’re the only asshole here!” I snap at him.

“Don’t get testy with me or I’ll bend you over that desk and make you remember who you belong to,” he growls.

“Not likely, asshole,” I tell him while rolling my eyes. “See, if you were my boyfriend, then I wouldn’t have a problem with that but well you’re not… so that’s out.”

“Don’t start with your shit again. Don’t worry, soon, you’ll be mine in more ways than one,” he growls.

“What the hell does that mean? Why are you even here? I said I’d be back when I can.” I huff.

“We all saw the news, and I wanted to come check on you,” he says sincerely.

“Fine. Just give me half an hour and wait for me in my spot in the parking garage. I don’t want my employees thinking I’m fraternizing with the enemy,” I mutter.

“Oh, we’re doing a lot more than fraternizing, baby,” he says with a smirk.

“Just fucking go before I call security on your ass!” I groan.

“Fine. I’ll wait down there because I want to and not because you told me to,” he says before walking out the door.

I mumble, “Sure,” after him.

When my half an hour is up, I grab what I need and head for the door. I feel terrible for leaving but Carson and Chase said they’d handle it. They both have more experience than I do so I trust them. Otherwise, I’d just be a sitting duck with no help if I stayed. Might as well go home and see what I can do from there.

I step out of the elevator and start walking toward my spot. I’ve barely made it a few steps when the squealing of tires sound. I look up in time to see a car coming right for me, and I barely manage to jump out of the way in time.

Holy fucking shit, I almost got ran over! What the hell? The car does a U-turn and comes back in my direction again. I kick off my heels and run. There’s no use trying to even run in these things. The car continues to follow me and as I run, a hand snakes out from behind a wall and pulls me out of the way.

I look up to see Mason and exhale a breath of relief. My heart is pounding, and the adrenaline is off the charts.

“Stay here!” he commands, and then he runs after the car. It came to a stop after I was pulled behind the wall. I look on from where I am, but I can’t see a thing or even who is inside since it’s heavily tinted. As Mason makes a run toward the car, it starts up and speeds off in the direction of the exit.

I’m not even sure how it was allowed into the garage in the first place. Now I’ll have to remember to get the security footage and look it over to see if I can get any clues.

“Are you okay?” Mason asks when he walks back over to me.

“Ye-yeah.” I say, lifting my hand to my face to wipe the hair away from my eyes. I don’t even realize they’re shaking until he grabs them in his and holds them tightly. “Did you see who it was or manage to get the license plate number?”

“No. It didn’t have a license plate, and the car was heavily tinted.” He tells me.
