“Excuse me?” I shrilled.

He gave me another one of those awful, decadent laughs that made my knees weak. I bit my lip. Damn the man.

“Baby doll, that’s far from an insult. It’s one of the things I like about you.”

Something about the way he said it made it sound like a high compliment. But if he wasn’t insulting me, that meant he was insulting Cat. I couldn’t let that pass. Until they weren’t engaged anymore, if that even happened, I wasn’t about to let him get away with dissing my friend.

“Cat is a Romanian mafie princess. My best friend and your fiancée.”

The bright blue of his eyes shuttered like a wall of ice, cutting me off from the hot burn behind his gaze. I felt it in my gut, like I’d been thrust into a meatpacking cooler with the door slammed behind me.

“How could I forget?” he drawled, a bitter edge to his tone. “Hopefully, Luca will do what’s right and break the shackles he’s single-handedly cuffed around my ankles with his tenacious stupidity.”

My bottom jaw unhinged and dropped open. I gaped at him. He knew. He knew what was happening between Luca and Cat. In that moment, I strongly suspected he knew more than Cat and I combined. There were dynamics between these brothers, probably within the entire Lupu family, that we were likely clueless about.

“Hop on. I don’t have all night,” he ordered curtly.

Casting my gaze around my surroundings, I shimmied my dress up to the tops of my thighs. Gritting my teeth, I swung my leg over and plastered myself to Nicu’s back, hoping against hope that I’d covered everything important. I glanced at him and found his eyes glued to my long leg, bare from the crease of my thigh down. I let out an embarrassed groan and covered my eyes.

His hand moved to my outer thigh and gripped it, causing me to gasp against his ear. I squeezed my eyes tighter.

“I like the sounds you make when I touch you. You’re so sensitive. Responsive. I’ll get you making sounds you’ve never made before, sounds just for me,” he promised darkly.

I blew out a breath, half exasperation, half unbridled lust. Yup, that comment confirmed he knew the effect he had on me. It was infuriating, but I barely restrained myself from panting.

“If you were a gentleman, you would’ve kept that to yourself,” I suggested.

He gave another chuckle.

“Lesson number one, little girl. You’ve got the wrong brother if you’re looking for a gentleman.”

Images flashed in my mind of the ungentlemanly things I wished he’d do to me.

Shut it down!, I screamed to myself as he twisted the throttle and his bike shot off from the curb. My fingers tightened around his taut waist, and I let out a little scream. His callous laugh flew past me as he increased his speed and ran a red light on the near-empty street.

If I faltered, there was one redeeming factor in this train wreck I was on. I was neither Romanian, nor mafie, nor a virgin. I could never be lassoed into his fucked-up, male-controlled world, because I knew a future heartbreak when I saw one, and the moment I laid eyes on him, I knew he’d be nothing but trouble.
