“Oh, fuck no,” I said.

“Oh, fuck yes,” Tatum countered with a grimace. “And Clara hates us. Almost as much as the Popescus when we were feuding.”

“So outside of the tussles between Cristo and me, we’ve basically subbed one feud for another,” I declared.

“Couldn’t put it better myself,” he mumbled.

I looked out of the window onto the six-lane highway still filled with bumper-to-bumper traffic though it was long past peak morning rush hour. Staring out at the never-ending lanes, I mused aloud, “Is it worth the trouble to expand out here? This place looks like a cesspit.”

“Pfft, you’re telling me? I’ve been here for over two weeks. You touched down an hour ago. Ultimately, it’s not our decision to make. I understand Alex’s motivation. Everything’s settled with the Popescus. We can’t sit on our laurels if we want to keep our position as the most powerful family in the United States. At this point, it’s become a point of honor. If we back off now, we look weak, and reputation is half the battle. We should’ve pulled out earlier if we hoped to remain unscathed. There’s no way we could live down being bullied out of L.A. by a little clan like theirs, no matter how ferocious they are,” explained Tatum. “My suggestion to you is, settle in for the ride.”

I flicked my gaze over to him once more. He met my eyes and held them.

I’d do my duty, but there was only so much time I could spend here. Sooner or later, I’d have to return to New York to settle the unfinished business between Jewel and me.
