“Sorry, ma’am… Actually, it was your son, Jason, who called. He wants me to join him, Christopher, and Johnny for golf tomorrow since it’s his day off…”

“Do you golf?” Cara asked. “Because my brothers will say that they’re good, but they actually are just good at drinking beers and smoking cigars while they play.”

“Well then, I’ll fit right in… we are meeting tomorrow morning.”

“Won’t that be nice, and you can go while Cara goes to class,” Joanne said as she glanced over at Cara.

Coop picked up on the intent of Joanne’s comment and did his best to quell her fears about Cara.

“She better go to class! She’s so close to that degree, after all.”

Joanne smiled and nodded in approval.

“Well, thanks for the pep talk, you two. I was planning on going to class. Believe it or not, I want to graduate,” Cara said as she gathered her things, signaling to Coop that it was time to leave.

“Thanks again for the hospitality, Miz Knox, and please let Mr. Knox know the same.”

“Bye…” Cara said as she walked out the door, Coop following. A Town Car awaited outside.

“Anytime, kids… Be safe!” Joanne yelled after them.

A few feet away from her Charlie Knox pretended to wake up as the door closed. He had heard everything, and like Coop, decided to avoid the awkwardness of addressing the situation.

I like this kid…
