“For being a cop, you’re pretty oblivious to what’s right in front of you.”

I remained silent because I wasn’t ready to respond to that.

“You could discuss it with her. Maybe she’ll surprise you and want something casual.”

Hope soared through me. Was it possible I’d created a barrier when none existed?

I tipped the glass to my lips. “It’s not a bad idea.”

“I like to think I give good advice.”

Mallory paused when she walked past, clearly hearing what he’d said. “I’m not sure he’s the one to ask. He was pretty clueless over Zoe for a long time.”

I grunted. She was right. They were friends, dancing around each other, not wanting to ruin their friendship by getting involved. Now that they’d worked things out, they were renovating his house and talking about getting a puppy. If Max’s life could change so much in a short time, could mine do the same?

No. This thing with Remi had a time limit. I wouldn’t allow anything else.

Zoe and Max were different. They’d been friends since they were kids. Remi and I didn’t have that same connection. I could have something with her that was casual, and neither of us would be hurt when I inevitably walked away.

My mind drifted to the image of her answering the door in that lace top, and my mind went straight to the gutter. I imagined her legs wrapped around me while I thrust inside her.

“Don’t assume anything. Talk to her about what’s on your mind, find out where she’s at. If her sister is a problem, she’ll tell you.”

I tipped my beer to him in thanks. “I hope you’re right.”

Max smirked. “I helped Ethan get Savannah. I’m becoming quite the matchmaker.”

Mallory groaned. “Don’t listen to him, Colton. If you and Remi get together, I’ll never hear the end of it.”

“You have nothing to worry about.” There was no chance of anything long-term coming from Remi and me.
