Glancing at the clock, I saw he was right. We needed to get moving. I kissed him lightly, and he cupped my breast.

Dropping my forehead to his, I said, “No more of that. I’ll never make it to work.”

“I wish we could stay in bed all day.” His expression was relaxed and content.

I loved seeing him like this. “Me too, but today’s not the day.”

I hopped out of bed, hurrying to start the water in his shower. The room was large and modern. When the water heated, I stepped inside, quickly soaping up and washing and conditioning my hair with the products he had. There was nothing feminine in his bathroom, making me feel better about staying overnight. Having a woman over hopefully wasn’t the norm for Colton.

It made me feel good, but also curious about why. Just like in high school, he was a guy any woman would be happy to get to know. Why did he seemingly keep himself away from relationships and intimacy?

Pulling on my clothes from last night, I joined him in the kitchen. I hadn’t planned on staying overnight. I thought we’d have a nice dinner, I’d introduce him to meditation, and the evening might get awkward with his skepticism. Instead, he’d believed in it—and me. He’d been touched by it, and we’d lost ourselves in each other.

Warmth wrapped around me like the steaming water of the shower.

“Just in time,” Colton said, sliding a plate with an omelet and sliced avocado in my direction. “You want a bagel with that? Coffee?”

“Just coffee, please. Wow. This is impressive.”

He gave me a pointed look. “It’s just an omelet.”

“It might be, but it looks amazing, especially with the sliced avocados. You get an A-plus for presentation.” I cut a piece, savoring the flavors of tomato, onion, and avocado.

He sat next to me, digging into his omelet. “I had some avocados lying around. They were still good.”

He shrugged off the early morning breakfast like it was no big deal when I suspected this whole thing with me wasn’t usual for him.

We didn’t have time to get into anything too deep, and I didn’t want to ruin what we’d shared last night, but I needed something. “We talk a lot about my past, most of which you already knew, but what about you?”

“What about me? You knew me as a kid.”

“What were you doing between”—I almost said my sister, but I stopped myself in time—“high school and now?”

His shoulders hunched. “College, then I enlisted.”

My stomach twisted, sensing he didn’t like my line of questions. “Why didn’t you finish school?”

“I’m finishing it now.”

I took the hint, finishing my omelet and sipping my coffee. When I was finished, I put away my dishes. “I should go. I need to change and get to the store.”

“I’ll walk you out.” Colton and Scout followed me to my car.

Turning to face him, I opened my mouth to say something about our earlier conversation, but he interrupted. “Can we do this again?”

His expression was soft, his words earnest.

“I’d love to.” I’d give him time. I understood how hard it could be to open up about your past. Just because it was easier for me didn’t mean it was the same for him.

He kissed me, and I suspected he was trying to distract me. When we finally broke apart and he opened my door for me, I said, “I want to know more about you.”

His jaw tightened.

“I don’t care if you graduated from college or not. You’re not ashamed, are you?”

He shook his head.

Then what could it be? What was he so tight-lipped about?
