“Because,” she said as her lips drew into a soft smile that melted his heart and eased the worries of his withered soul, “I have faith ye will. There is nothin’ that ye cannae dae once yer put yer mind to it.”

“I daenae even ken where to start. All the paths I’ve tried have been nothin’ but dead ends,” Conner said as he grabbed her hand and drew it to his lap. Dropping his head, he wished with all his heart he could believe her. But the nagging doubt in his gut wouldn’t go away.

“Ye must believe that ye can dae this,” she said. “Nae one can walk the path that yer on, but ye. Perhaps why things have failed is because ye needed a different perspective.”

“Like what?” he huffed. Defeat crushed his spirits as he glanced at her. “I’ve tried everythin’. I’ve spoken to so many, yet it has gotten me nay where.”

“Who have ye spoken to about all this?” she asked as she brushed her fingers over Conner’s knuckles. The way her fingertips grazed over his skin sent chills racing through his hand.

“The lairds, of course, and a few of their wives. Damon, of course, and now ye.”

“Have ye spoken wit’ the servants who were there that night? Ye could ask them what they remember.”

“What does a servant ken?” Conner huffed.

“A lot more than ye think,” she answered. “After all, they see all that goes on within the walls of an estate. They may nae say anythin’ about it. But they see and hear things ye or I would nae.”

Conner studied Olivia’s face for a moment, letting her words seep into him. There was no denying the truth as he noticed the obscure faces in the windows. Rolling his shoulders back he felt as if a veil had been removed from his sight.

“Why did I nae think of that before? I’ve been goin’ off my own memories. But what if what I think I ken is wrong?”

“That is why ye need people that love ye to help ye wit’ this. Goin’ this alone will only cause ye to go in circles,” Olivia said. Joy rippled through every fiber of his being. Conner threw his arms around Olivia and drew her ever closer. Embarrassment and regret pricked him, but it wasn’t anything he couldn’t ignore. He knew it was his pride that was wounded more than anything else.

“Thank ye,” he whispered as his lips brushed the top of her head.

“I told ye I could help, if ye only let me,” she said. Conner pulled away and stared at her. The wind played with the loose strands of her hair around her ears and the way the moonlight shimmered on her skin made her look like an angel of mercy.

Without warning, Conner leaned closer. Her breath touched his lips in small bursts as he paused. Cupping his hands to her face, he crushed his lips to hers and felt her body mold to his. The passion she had ignited in him from last night kindled and sparked. He felt like a new man in her presence.

A cool breeze caught them both by surprise. Olivia shuddered under him and surprisingly clung to him tighter than before. Conner’s hand drifted from her face to the nape of her neck. His fingers dug into the hair at the back of her head as his kiss shifted. A hunger consumed him and he wanted more.

Olivia patted his chest and stepped back. She gasped for air as her eyes shifted to the window. “We have eyes on us.”

A small part of Conner’s mind took note, but it was of no consequence to him who watched them. All he could see was Olivia. The desire for her outweighed the social status and customs. He stalked her until she was pinned against the wall of the castle.

“Let them watch,” he growled in her ear.

“Nae here,” she pleaded. Clawing at the stone wall, Conner tried to regain his sensibility. His heart pounded in his chest as he gulped the fresh air. He knew she was right. If there was anyone watching them that saw this as an act of love, it would put Olivia in danger.

Slowly, he straightened and as he towered over her, he noticed the same passion consuming him burned within her. Her eyes shifted to the door to the side.

“Where does that lead?” she asked.

“The servant’s quarters.”

“And where are the servants right now?” she asked as her eyebrow arched.

“Busy elsewhere, I would presume,” he said with a smirk. It took all of one heartbeat to pick up on what she wanted from him. Curling his arm around her waist, he drew her to the side entrance. In one fluid movement, he pulled the door open and had her inside in a flash.

The hallway was dark, lit by only a few torches that lined the wall. The orange glow danced on her face, making her even more intriguing and mysterious than ever. Passion consumed him. He pushed her against the wall and clawed at the fabric of her dress until it was bunched at her hip.

Olivia’s hand guided him to her inner thighs. The moisture pooled between her legs only caused him to crave her even more.

“I want ye,” he growled as he let his fingers slip into her body. A small moan escaped her lips as she curled her leg around his body, trapping him.

“As I want ye,” she gasped as he slipped his finger out of her before plunging it back into the warmth of her body. Her fingernails raked his back, causing the hunger to intensify within him.

“I’m yers to dae wit’ as ye please.”
