Chapter 14

Curling her leg tighter around Conner’s body, Olivia threw her head back. Every inch of her clung to him as her mind wandered to the bedroom. It wasn’t hard for her to envision all the things she wanted him to do to her. After what he gave her last night, she was desperate for more.

Conner’s tongue flicked her earlobe as his hot breath rolled down her neck, causing little bumps to breakout all over her flesh. He shifted causing their bodies to ram into the small table to their left. The rattling of the vase on the table echoed in her ears. She jumped at the crash of porcelain at her feet. Before Conner could look at the mess, Olivia grabbed his head, forcing him to remain locked on her. The last thing she wanted was for him to stop.

“Daenae worry,” Olivia whispered. “I didnae like that vase to begin wit’.”

“And is that how ye plan to re-arrange the castle? By smashin’ things to bits?”

“I did nae dae that,” Olivia giggled as Conner’s finger pumped deeper into her causing her to catch her breath. She gulped the air down her parched throat as she smiled. “Ye did.”

“Says ye,” he panted as the tip of his thumb teased the small bulb of flesh between her legs. Her legs trembled, making it nearly impossible to stand any longer. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she heard a gasp, but couldn’t tell if it was coming from Conner or someplace else. Either way, she didn’t care.

Suddenly, there was an emptiness between her legs. The place where Conner’s fingers had been was void and empty. Her muscles tightened as she looked at him. His head was turned away from her, his eyes fixated down the hallway. Olivia didn’t care that they had an audience, but it was clear by the abruptness of him pushing her dress down, he did.

“Forgive me,” the servant said with a blush to her cheeks that surely matched the one on Olivia’s face. Masking her giggle, Olivia glanced at Conner as he leaned forward, pressing both hands against the wall, trapping Olivia. His shoulders dropped with regret as the patter of footsteps fell away.

Cupping her hands to his face, Olivia pressed her lips to his cheeks, bombarding him with tiny little pecks until he drew his eyes to her. There was pain lingering in his gaze. A pain that she couldn’t help but wonder where it came from.

“I shouldnae have gotten so carried away,” he panted, trying desperately to regain his breathing.

“Shh,” she mumbled between her kisses. “It was nae yer fault. Perhaps ye can blame me, if ye want.”

“Oh,” Conner said with a playful smirk. “I dae blame ye. If ye werenae so temptin’, I’d have ye here and now.”

“Then what is stoppin’ ye?” she asked as her lips grazed across his jaw and down his neck.

In a flash, his fingers curled around her wrists and pulled her hand off his face. Olivia’s eyes widened as she found herself practically dragged down the hallway, trailing behind Conner. There was a determination in his stride, a purpose to his gait.

With a smile on her face, she followed behind him as fast as her legs could carry her. Conner’s grip tightened as he took the stairs two at a time. Olivia gasped as her foot caught the step, causing her to lunge forward. Before she tumbled, Conner spun about and caught her in his strong, thick, capable arms.

She was off her feet before she had a chance to right herself. Throwing her arms around Conner’s neck, he bounded the steps and whisked her down the hall. Kicking open the bedroom door, Olivia noticed Conner’s jaw flexing as he chewed over his words.

“Oh, have mercy,” he growled, releasing his arms from her body. The drop was pleasant as the soft mattress softened the fall. Olivia stared up at him as his hands scrambled to his belt. Before the thick leather strap slipped from the loop, Conner paused. His eyebrows furrowed and he dropped his hands to his sides, exasperated.

“Conner?” Olivia asked as he stumbled away from the bed. He looked as if he’d been struck by a mighty blow.

Through pursed lips, Conner closed his eyes as he whispered, “Forgive me.”

Conner pulled in long deep breaths to quench his desires as he stared down at Olivia. Her eyes wide and welcoming drew him to her like a moth to a flame. There was no doubt in his mind she wanted him just as badly as he needed her. Yet, for the life of him, he couldn’t take her.

“Conner?” The worry and concern in her tone cut him like a double edged sword. With his heart pounding in his chest he shook his head.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered again. “I’ll nae put ye in harm’s way.”

“What are ye talkin’ about?” Olivia asked as she scrambled to the edge of the bed. Her hands reached out for him. Before he could step out of her reach, her fingers curled into his vest and pulled him back to her.

Oh, if she only ken what she does to me. How temptin’ she is. It’s like water to a fish, or the air to a bird. But I cannae put her in danger. Nae wit’ everythin’ else goin’ on.

“Dae ye nae want me?” He could hear the rejection in her voice as she dropped to her knees. Her eyes swelled with tears causing his heart to shatter into a million pieces. How he wished he could be the man she deserved. A man that was willing to give her everything her heart desired. Yet, in the depths of his being he knew he couldn’t, at least not now.

“Forgive me,” he said again. “I should go.”

“What? Why? Please,” Olivia begged as he pried her hands off him and moved around the bed. He didn’t look back, knowing one glimpse at her would break his resolve to leave. Although he had taken her only just the other night, doing so again would solidify his feelings for her in ways he wasn’t yet ready to deal with.

Flexing his jaw, he moved in haste toward the door. The soft whimper behind him caused him to pause. Swallowing hard, he didn’t have to look back to know Olivia was hurt. He heard it in her voice and saw the pain he inflicted in her eyes as he walked away.
