“Olivia.” Her name rolled off his tongue like sap from a tree. Stretching to her tiptoes, Olivia crushed her lips to his. Conner wrapped his arms around her body and pulled her up off her feet.

She didn’t know where he was taking her, she didn’t care. All that mattered was she was with him now. All the passion and ire bubbling in her faded as he lowered her to his bed.

She moaned as she popped the buttons off his vest one by one. “I’m here, right now. I’m yers for life. So dae wit’ me as ye will.”

Olivia stepped closer, studying him. She pulled in a quick breath as his fingers tugged on the string of her bodice. Peeling off the heavy fabric, she kept her eyes locked on him as he pushed aside the dress. Piece by piece he peeled off the layers of her clothing until she stood before him bare.

Chapter 15

The birds chirping outside the window pulled Conner out of the best sleep he’d had in months. Every muscle in his body was relaxed and his withered soul renewed. He felt like a completely different person and he knew it was all thanks to Olivia.

Slowly, he turned his head and through hazy, sleepy eyes, he stared at her. The way her hair flowed around her face reminded him of the clouds drifting across the glen. She breathed in and shivered. Immediately, Conner grabbed the blankets and pulled them over her bare chest.

A smile played on her lips, causing his heart to flutter. It had been years since he experienced the kind of peace he found in that bed. Ever so carefully, he shifted and molded himself to her. Pulling in a long deep breath, he found himself enchanted by the smell of her hair. The scent was like wildflowers on the moors that had been kissed by the ocean breeze.

“Mornin’,” she mumbled as she grabbed his arm and pulled it closer to her. She snuggled deeper into his embrace as the golden rays crashed through the window.

“How are ye feelin’?” he whispered, nuzzling his nose into her neck and causing her to squirm. The way her body shifted against his made him smile as flashes of last night drifted into his mind.

“Sleepy,” she giggled as he pushed back her hair from his face to stop the tickling of his nose.

“Aye well, suppose that is to be expected when yer up at all hours of the night.”

“And I wonder who could have made me stay up?”

“Perhaps a sprite came in to play wit’ ye,” he whispered in her ear as she giggled.

“I’d think it was more of a nymph,” she said, tilting her head a bit to steal a glimpse at him.

If there was one thing Conner wanted more than anything, it was to linger in bed all day with her. But the nagging in the back of his mind wouldn’t ease.

“Ye look like yer about to leave me,” she said, refusing to let him go.

“I dae have work to dae,” he said regretfully.

“Must ye?”

“Aye,” he said, pressing his lips to the top of her head. “It was inspired by ye.”

“Well, then, I take it all back. I was wrong. Whatever I said to prompt ye to leave me this early in the mornin’ I recant.”

Conner chuckled as the birds outside the window pecked at the glass. “Ye cannae dae that.”

“Aye, I can. And I believe I just did.”

The door moaned as it opened. Olivia’s eyes widened as she grabbed the covers and threw them over her head just as abruptly as the servant charged into the room.

“Mornin’ M’Laird, rest well, did ye?” The servant’s lips pursed into a tight line and her eyebrow arched on noticing the movement under the covers.

“Ye could say that,” Conner answered, trying hard not to laugh as Olivia squirmed to the foot of the bed.

“Permission to speak freely to ye,” the girl said as she dropped the tray of food on the small table and propped her hands to her waist. The glare on her face only made Conner want to laugh even harder, but he refrained.

“Go on,” he said in a stern voice to match hers.

“What are ye doin’? Lady Olivia loves ye and I dare say yer in bed wit’ another? It would break her heart kenning ye were wit’ someone else when she’s been workin’ so hard to gain yer attention. Is this the reason why ye’ll nae be wit’ her? Yer heart belongs to another. What would yer maither say?”

“Arya,” Conner said, pulling in a deep breath as the servant continued ranting about his moral obligations. He spoke the servant’s name once again finally getting her to cease with her many accusations.
