Olivia

Olivia pursed her lips into a tight line as she read back the letter. There was just so much more that she wanted to write, to ask , yet she knew it could never all fit in one letter. She folded the parchment and sealed it. Rising from her small writing table, she walked to the door.

She practically skipped as she moved down the hallway. Olivia’s mind raced as she thought of the feast coming up, and names for the baby. It was like everything that she thought was so important before, was nothing compared to the baby she now had inside her.

“I daenae care if the lady is wit’ child.”

Olivia paused in the middle of the hallway, her heart sank to her stomach as a cold chill raced over the back of her neck. She took a step back and glanced to her right. The door to the music room was cracked just enough for her to peek inside. Although she couldn’t see their faces, the voices were all too familiar.

“She thinks this will change anythin’? It willnae,” Sionn’s voice hissed causing Olivia to shudder. An icy grip encompassed her. Without a peep, Olivia fluttered down the hallway trying hard not to let her feet echo down the hallway. Turning at the corner, she rushed through the entrance way and made a beeline for Conner’s study.

Pushing through the doors, Olivia hunted for Conner in his usual spot behind the large desk. But when her eyes landed on his empty chair, she caught her breath.

“Olivia?” Conner’s voice coming from behind her eased her. It was as if he were a blanket covering her from all things. She turned slowly and smiled at him.

“I wrote the letter to my family invitin’ them to the feast,” she said, handing Conner the note. He glared at her a moment before reaching for the note. Olivia held onto the folded parchment refusing to let Conner have it. Only when he kissed her did she give him the letter.

“Excellent, I’ll have it sent out in the mornin’,” he said.

“And what are ye doin’ right now?” Olivia asked as her heart quickened. A part of her wanted to tell Conner what she heard in the hallway, but the truth of the matter was, she wasn’t certain. The moment was so fleeting and she didn’t get a clear shot of the two in the room. The more she thought about it, the less confident she became.

Rubbing her temples, she tried not to think too hard on it. After all, it wasn’t like she could do anything about it.

Was that Sionn in the room? Surely it was. There is only one person with a voice that scratchy. But what was he talkin’ about? Why would my pregnancy change anythin’? Surely, if the bairn is a boy, then the succession continues, as it should.

“What is troublin’ that beautiful mind of yers?” Conner asked as he towered over Olivia. “Ye look so distraught right now. Tell me, what can I dae for ye?”

“Tis nothin’,” Olivia said, grabbing his hands. “Just whispers in the hallways.”

“Oh, and what things have ye picked up on?” Conner asked, resting his hand on her chest.

“I think I heard Sionn in the music room,” Olivia said as her voice trembled with uncertainty and doubt.

“Well, he daes play.”

“I thought I heard him say that my pregnancy will nae change anythin’,” Olivia said as she studied Conner’s face. “Dae ye have any idea what that means?”

Conner shook his head and shrugged. “Couldnae tell ye. But I wouldnae let it worry ye.”

“It daesnae, nae really. I just found it odd. And truth is, I’m nae entirely certain he was in there. I didn’t see his face.”

“Olivia, my love, dae ye nae have more pressin’ matters to worry over?” Conner asked as he pressed his hand to her belly and smiled. “Daenae concern yerself wit’ the matters of the council. Ye just worry about ye and our child.”

The heat flowing off Conner’s hand made Olivia’s body tremble. It was as if he was her personal sun, warming every inch of her. Throwing her arms around his neck, she rose to the tips of her toes and pressed her lips to him.

“I love ye,” she whispered as her fingers ran through his hair.

“Aye,” he said as a mischievous grin played on his lips. “How much dae ye love me?”

Olivia enclosed as much of her body around him as she could. There was a sudden burst of lust that excited her. She didn’t care they were in his study with the door open wide. No, she needed him.

Conner’s hands flowed over Olivia’s body as if they were possessed. There wasn’t a place on her body that he didn’t graze over in search for more territory. Olivia curled her leg around his hoping to draw him in closer.

Something crashed at their feet. Olivia couldn’t help but smile as she noticed neither of them stopping to find out what. The heat between them burned ever hotter. Conner’s fingers dipped and played at the hem of Olivia’s collar as she ran her hands up his chest and curled over his shoulders.

“Dae ye have any idea what ye dae to me woman?” Conner panted as he struggled with the lace to her bodice. The hunger drove them to the couch. Each scrambling and straining to undress the other between their passionate kisses.

Lowering Olivia onto the couch, Conner used the back of the couch to brace himself. Olivia’s chest rose and fell as she watched the string of her bodice lengthen. The pressure around her breast eased as Conner slipped his fingers between the laces and loosened them.
