Logan’s eyes were the darkest green I’d seen yet. “You can’t dance with him and look at me like that.”

I should’ve lied, said I wanted the red-haired warrior at my back, but all I could do was shake my head.

The man slid his hand from my chest and down my hand to kiss my palm. “Come to the south shore if you want more, Valkyrie.”

He stepped away as I realized he was an Einherjar. I understood his words, and also his meaning. More meant a lot more than dancing. If I didn’t want someone else, his offer would be intriguing. But he wasn’t the man Charlie wanted to be next to.

Logan didn’t say a word to the man as the warrior turned and walked toward a path leading away from the courtyard. Neither did I. I was still trying to form words to say to Logan. All the thoughts were too pathetic, too devastating to say, so I stood there silently in front of him.

I had planned to step away from him, to make some distance between me and his warmth, but he smoothed his hands around my waist and inched me closer into him.

Before it went any further, I needed to push him away.

“Logan, I—

He dipped his head, raking his beard down my neck before he brushed a slight kiss under my earlobe. “I know what you want when you look at me the way you did across the fire. And the way you do when I touch you. It’s the same way you looked at me the night I first kissed you.” Logan nibbled lower on my neck. “I want to kiss every bit of skin I see tonight, starting here.”

He kissed a trail lower, down to my chest.

I craned my head back to give him better access and reached up to grip onto his shoulder. My fingertips bit into soft brown leather.

At least his torso was covered. I had to keep my sanity. I had to get away from him. It didn’t help calm my fevered need when everyone on the dance floor was in even more provocative embraces than us. The air pulsed with energy from the others; even the band had turned the music to a sinful blend of strings and drums that matched Logan’s warm kisses.

I need to stop this, before it gets any further.

“Logan, please—”

He brushed his lips over my ear. “Please what? I’ll do whatever you want. I’d follow you to edge of the universe if you promise to keep looking at me like that.”

Logan cupped the back of my head and teased his lips over mine until my mouth parted.

His spicy flavor was too much to pull away from. I licked over his lips while he deepened the kiss. I wanted to curl into him, wrap myself around him, and pretend nothing else existed.

This kiss would only do more damage, but I wanted him so badly. I couldn’t pull away from him on my own. I needed help. I was too far gone to end it now.

At my slight plea, my light surged forth and crackled down my arms, knocking me backwards.

“Logan, no!” The words were a command. They were straight from the Valkyrie because Charlie had never spoken with such force before.

The music paused as people turned toward us. The commotion caused others around the fire to stop their conversations and peer around at us.

Logan stood a few feet from me, watching the light spark down my palms across my fingertips. “What’s wrong, Charlie?”

The confusion in his voice made my soul ache. None of this was fair to him.

“I can’t. Not with you,” I said.

The words were like lead on my tongue. It would’ve been easier face a hoard of Raiders than look into his eyes when he heard what I said. In that moment I would’ve taken back everything, even the promise, if it would change the pain I saw in his eyes.

Ales and Danny appeared beside Logan. Both glanced down at my hands before stepping in between me and Logan. Ales cut his eyes to me as a devilish grin crept over his face. “What happened?”

My light flickered brighter at Ales’ presence.

“I don’t want to talk about it. It’s over,” I said, clenching my palms to snuff out the light, pushing it into the background of my thoughts.

“A kiss like that says otherwise,” Logan said.

Now I’ve really messed it up.
