Danny hadn’t been able to walk away from her for the past few hours. They had sat by the fire, gesturing and teaching each other words, apparently.

“You can’t tell anyone. The Einherjar need the Valkyrie, and knowing I’m still Charlie will not be good, for anyone.”

Lana patted her chest. “Safe.”

“Secret. In English, secret,” I said.

Lana nodded and laid her head back on my shoulder.

After watching the waves for a while, Lana stood up and we started walking down the mountain, back to the village. We descended past a small stone alcove when we saw Cri, more like heard Cri and his friends. He was with the couple from the courtyard, and no one was clothed.

I tripped over a rock as I tried to walk past the group without being seen.

Lana started giggling.

I gestured for her to be quiet, but it didn’t help.

“Ouch!” I yelled as my foot rammed into a rock.

Lana let out a laugh so loud, the entire island probably heard it as I tumbled to my knees in front of Cri and his friends.

Great, now Cri and everyone else knows we saw them.

Cri and his friends stopped, and unabashedly peered at me.

I stared down at the ground to avoid a full-frontal view of everyone. “Sorry about that, everybody.”

“I’ve never seen a shy or clumsy Valkyrie. If I hadn’t seen you change Danny, I’d swear Ales was wrong,” Cri said.

The snap in Cri’s tone made me flinch. Through his drunken debauchery, he was sober enough to be suspicious.

“I still don’t sense the Valkyrie strong enough,” Cri said, edging closer. “What is wrong with you?”

“Just drunk,” I said.

I backed into Lana who had gone still as soon as Cri spoke. She pulled at my arm, yanking me toward home.

I dared a glance at Cri before I turned down the mountain. I saw him shake his head in moonlight. “It’s not the wine. It’s you.”
