“Lana, have you ever loved someone? I mean, besides whatever is going on between you and Danny?”

“Yes. I have loved. Have you loved?”

“I was married, and I loved him very much. I was sure I could never want another person as much.”

“You were woven to another?”

“In my world we call it marriage, but yes. Until he… died,” I said.

“Oh, Charlie.” Lana threaded her fingers through mine. “I’m sorry.”

“Do you think we are only allowed one person to love and that is it? Is it beyond greedy to love two people at once?” I’d never wanted to tell anyone about Jason. It made the guilt of wanting Logan and Ales so much worse, but Lana felt more like a sister than a roommate. She’d already seen me at my worst, and didn’t look at me like a failure. That made her family in my world.

“Love knows no bounds.”

I couldn’t understand where she got her confidence from.

“You and Danny are quite the optimists together.” With all of the death she must’ve seen, it would be so much easier to hate everything, to resent what happened to her, and let it guide her now.

“My people share hundreds of words for love. I use them all,” she said.

“I like the way your beautiful mind thinks.” I had the perfect idea for my last night as Charlie. “Can you teach me them, all of them, tonight?”

I wasn’t sure if I could do what Cri had asked, but at least I’d try to give the Valkyrie something to remember.
