Chapter Twenty-Six

Passion

I changed out of my armor into a light long shirt and pants Lana had found so I could sleep without being naked or constrained by the snug suit. We ate dinner as Lana wrote symbols using her finger on a tray of sand—Danny had created a clever method for learning a new language.

She traced the word and said it aloud. Together we piecemealed the phrases of Kungyr into English. There was sisterly love, animal love, intimate love between those woven together, love for a stranger, for a warrior, and for sheer passion. We were on the fiftieth word when a light tap sounded on the front door.

Lana ran and opened the door.

I assumed it was Danny, and readied myself to sneak out of the window of my bedroom when Ales appeared in my doorway.

“Leaving?”

“Oh. It’s you. I thought you were Danny. I was going to make a speedy escape to avoid overhearing him and Lana continue their earlier make-out session.”

“Make-out session?”

“It’s like kissing, but with more tongue.” Kinda like our dreams. “Never mind. Why are you here?”

“Cri said tonight was your last night as Charlie.”

“The man doesn’t know confidentiality, does he?”

“Come with me?” He held out his hand.

“Where are we going?”

“To do something Charlie and the Valkyrie will enjoy.”

“Chocolate?”

“Chocolate is something you do?”

“If you do it right, it can be a verb. It’s this amazingness that melts in your mouth and tastes like the nectar from the flowers, but richer. If you ever return to my world, please try it. For the both of us.”

“Is it like making out?”

“It can be better. Best part—it only requires one person.”

“Can we do it together?”

“I think we are getting off on a chocolate tangent… my fault. Where do you want to go, Ales?”

He seemed nervous, standing in the doorway to my bedroom. He normally threw something at me then left every morning in a hurry. Now he was… meandering.

“Trust me, with all of you?”

He wanted both of Us present for tonight?

“I can try.”

Ales threaded his fingers around mine and pulled me from the room, past Lana and outside. He didn’t stop once we were on the soft trail leading away from the village. He led me toward the courtyard, then veered into the forest behind it. A small spring appeared. The sound of water trickling over rocks combined with the music from the courtyard. The spring was the same from my last two dreams with him. I didn’t have to enter the water to know it would flow over my head.

The beat of drums bounded faster over the laughter of couples beyond the tree line.

“What’s the occasion for the festival tonight?” I asked, peeking through the trees enough to see the flames in the canopy opening.

“There is music and dancing every night on Eir. There doesn’t need to be a reason.”
