“That’s a loaded question.” I opened the front door.

“Does that mean yes?” Logan said, stepping onto the squeaky boards of the front porch.

“It means I’m definitely not someone you want to think about beyond tonight,” I said, following him underneath the porch light.

Two car lights flashed as an SUV entered the short driveway, parking next to my car.

“Who is that?” I glanced at Logan, putting on his boots. He was thoughtful enough not to track mud into my place. Jesus, he was making this hard.

“A friend. I texted him on the way to see if he could swing by,” he said while lacing his boots. “Although horrible timing,” I thought I heard him mumble under his breath.

I averted my eyes away from the bright lights. I didn’t want him to go. I wanted him to stay for as long as he wanted, but he shouldn’t. He needed to leave, and I needed to make him. I was too messed up to date someone, especially someone who seemed so charmingly normal, kind, real.

“Thank you for everything, honestly.”

“No problem. You are certainly the most interesting thing I’ve found while working,” he said.

Against my own will, a small laugh escaped my chest. “Good night, Logan.”

“Sweet dreams, Charlie,” he whispered in my ear.
