I knew what he meant. He wanted to see what I wasn’t telling him. What was too painful to say out loud.

Ales crept another step closer and reached out his hand. His rough fingertips brushed up my arm, to my shoulder, resting where his mouth had last night. The aether still glowed in the tiny spot on my neck. Small sparks of pleasure radiated underneath his two fingers. My body responded to him against my will.

He waited, slowly edging nearer to my body. His mind stroked against mine, this time leading with notes of sweet nectar. I responded to it. He tasted very inviting, like something I wanted to drown in.

His thumb joined his other two fingers. He traced circles over his strange love bite. The circles were making me dizzy. My body was betraying me, my mind slipping against his gentle strokes of pleasure.

My hand clasped his forearm to steady myself, but my mind gave way.

He moved so quickly. I wasn’t sure if it was my mind or my body that was overwhelmed more. He held onto my shoulder as lightning, pure aether, sang where he touched. My mind was too dazed to shield anything from him anymore.

I stared up into his silver eyes. The molten light began overtaking his pupils, and his head tilted in confusion.

“Elskan mín, you think today changes what is between us?” His words melted into my thoughts. His hands moved before my mind answered. They brushed around my back as he came behind me, like he had last night. He dipped his head to brush his lips against the nape of my neck, over the sensitive spot.

Pleasure raced straight to my core. I tilted my head to side. He grazed his teeth over it. I sighed when he licked and then nipped roughly at it.

“Don’t lie to me. What does every part of you want?”

I couldn’t lie if I wanted. He was connected to me, bound to the Valkyrie, which only intensified the link between us.

I needed something I never dared I could truly have. I was the Valkyrie and Charlie, and I loved both men. I was like the island of Eir with its two suns. I would never be complete having only one. Now that I’d seen a world with both.

So, I showed Ales the truth. The warmth I felt with Logan. The way his kiss grounded me, made me feel like I was home again. I didn’t love Ales less. I just needed Logan, too.

When the images, the emotions were explained fully, Ales withdrew from the connection. He ebbed out of my thoughts, and took a step away from me.

Oh no… I’m going to lose him too.

“Ales, I want to be with you. I love you.”

“Not this way. I won’t.”

Ales turned and headed for the door.

“Please don’t leave like this, Ales.”

He looked over his shoulder. “I need to leave now.”

“I’ll go with you.”

“No. I have to do this alone.”

“Where are you going?”

He shook his head. He didn’t want me in his mind. He didn’t want to tell me. He pulled away from our connection.

“Ales… promise you’ll come back?”

“I will return tonight.”

His leaving spurred at the dark memories; the night Jason left. When he was too furious to fight or talk. And he never came back.

I found my way to his tub and filled it so it would go to the very top once I was in. I scrubbed at the darkness on my skin, trying not to panic about Ales walking out. He would come back. He said he would. But where did he need to go at that exact moment? What did he not want me to see?

I sank underneath the water, holding my breath for as long as I could.

Ales wouldn’t lie. He wouldn’t leave me and not return.
