Ales tilted his head toward me. “It’s her. Einherjar adapt their minds to the Valkyrie. We connect to their consciousness in a way. That allows us to communicate in battle, too. It is not so much speaking as connecting to each other through a bond. All Einherjar can communicate to each other in this way, across worlds of existence, although the farther away, the more convoluted it can become. Cri gave us names he could pronounce a few centuries ago. My world and Leo’s world don’t share a verbal language like yours at all. I thought since you are from the same world, you would appreciate the names he gave us.”

“Fascinating. That is why I couldn’t understand you all before. It didn’t even sound like a language to me.” Danny was nodding along as if this made perfect sense.

My head was going to split apart. A little drummer beat into my temples with pitchforks. Maybe it was all of this connecting. It was all a little too much for me. I tried to work through how we were all still breathing.

I closed my eyes, pleading with the pain to go away. It had been at least a few days since I had eaten a full meal. The bite of chicken didn’t count. My mind raced through everything that Ales had said, but my body was shutting down fast.

I leaned back onto the bench seat as Logan and Danny’s voices flowed over the ocean. They continued to question Ales. Hesitation veiled their initial statements, but excitement cut through most of their questions. They had known the creatures were real, and now they had the power to destroy them.

Some sort of messed-up magic... was it too much to hope for dwarves to do my bidding? No, I get beautiful, brooding harbingers of death.

My back sunk lower onto the deck. I tried to drown out their words. When small waves surged under the boat—my muscles had loosened just enough to sleep—my entire body hit the deck with a thud.

Too tired to move, I let my head rest on the ground.

A strong, warm arm came under my back.

I didn’t have to open my eyes to know it was Logan’s hands supporting my head. He wrapped a warm arm under my legs and lifted me off the deck.

Silently, I begged for him to just let me sleep.

My body melted into him. He carried me off the deck into the compartment below.
