Chapter One

____________

Sebastian

I don't really do bars. They make me nervous. They remind me of a time I would rather not recall. The one where my life skidded off the tracks and I wound up in prison. But Dirk asked me to come help him with something tonight and damned if I could tell him no for anything. That man saved my life. He would never take the credit, but I owe being here tonight all to him.

Me and Dirk grew up together in a part of the neighborhood where you either got tough or wound up dead. Dirk kept his nose clean, went into the military, and made something out of his life. I started boosting cars and got picked up and sent away before I was twenty, damn it. Thankfully when I got out, I had Dirk there for me.

He even offered me a place to stay when I first moved to this island after visiting him here about a year ago. Everyone on this island thinks that I'm still nothing more than a visitor here. Hell, they don’t think Dirk’s one of them either and he's the damned sheriff. Not that any of them are assholes about it. They just fit together and are comfortable while I'm still trying to find my 'island legs'. I still can't get used to the slow pace everyone seems to move at. I like it...I'm just not used to it yet.

I peek over at the table with the James' sisters and try to hide my interest in the redhead who is sitting talking to one of her sisters. Her mother owns the store across the street from mine that sells homemade lotions and candles and soaps, so she is a constant reminder of what I want but can't have. She is the embodiment of payment for my sins. Charlene James. Something I can never have.

She's fucking beautiful with bright red hair and soft-looking skin that just begs for a man to reach out and touch it. She's not tall at all, not that I've ever been close enough to find out for sure, but her sisters aren't tall either and she's the same size they are. She's an artist who does amazing work with oils and almost always has some paint streaked somewhere on her body; which shouldn't be sexy but really does it for me. I bet I could spend hours searching for those little splashes of color on her beautiful body.

I could sit for hours at the open doors of my garage bay watching her walk and listening to the sound of her laughter as she talks to her sisters. Yeah, I've spent a lot of time doing just that and it doesn't get any less creepy when I try to justify it either. I know I'm messed up and that I shouldn't be doing it...but I can't seem to stop.

"God damn it!" I look over at Dirk. He just came in and there are people trying to get his attention -mostly women. But I'm pretty sure he’s not god damning any of them. "I'm going to spank her little ass so hard."

Yeah, he’s not talking about any of them. He's talking about the redhead climbing on top of the table and dancing around. Another James sister. The youngest one I think.

"Need some help?" Dirk growls through his teeth at me, making me reword my question, "With the other sisters?" I hold my hands up showing him I'm not coming after his girl.

He gives me a relieved grin and a quick nod before turning and heading for the table where all the girls are seated. I follow him.

"Ladies. How are you lovely women doing tonight?" Even though he addresses the whole table his eyes are pinning the youngest to her seat.

"Well now that you're here Sheriff Knight I'd say we're a lot better." The blonde one who models answers with a smile that lets me know why she's the model. She's beautiful no doubt but she’s not her sister. Those loose curls and fiery eyes make Charlie a lot more interesting to me than this sister.

"Speak for yourself." Everyone at the table looks over with shock at the youngest one. Dirk's got a hell of a trek before this girl is ready to accept what he’s wanting to give her. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends with him handcuffing her to the bed.

Dirk doesn't lose the smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. "Everyone this is my good friend, Sebastian Lane."

"You own that custom motorcycle shop across from mom's, right?" Willa asks before she reaches out to shake my hand and the rest of the sisters follow suit. Charlie is the last one to shake my hand and I can't fight the need to hold on to her a little longer.

Before we can sit down or do anything else, Dirk's girl stands up and pulls her sister up with her. Her sister turns a little pale and whispers something about not understanding why someone is where they are before Hadden talks over her, "Let's dance. I feel like finding someone to go home with tonight."

I see the rage fly into my friend's eyes and can tell that’s the last thing she should have said. Before she can say another word, Dirk is grabbing her by the arm and pulls her away from the others. They whisper-hiss at one another and the tension in the whole damned building goes up to sweltering high. I grab a seat next to Charlie. I have a feeling it's going to be a minute before Dirk is ready to leave which leaves me free to experience Charlie - or as much as I'm ever going to have of her anyway.

Maybe my luck has changed for the better after all.
