Chapter Thirteen

Jace

“M

arisol, are you all right?” The organ in my chest has skipped a beat in panic. The last thing I expect to find is Marisol hyperventilating when entering the bedroom. Her eyes are closed, chest perked out, and deep in thought.

Her big browns slowly open and their intensity rocks me. Heavy lids radiating desire, which explains the rapid breathing. She’s turned on. The sight of her breasts heaving with each inhale has me devouring every detail of her body. She’s sin personified.

A deep groan escapes as my newly adorned shorts become tighter with every passing second. My nostrils flare, absorbing her scent. I swear I can smell her desire, which puts my newfound restraint to the ultimate test. There has never been a more perfect match for me, shooting guilt straight through my heart, wishing I hadn’t wasted my previous years on a bunch of nobodies. She’s too good for me and I don’t deserve her, but I’ll spend every waking moment earning her from here on out, proving that I can be worthy.

We’re both silent. My question hanging in the air until realization catches up and she turns every shade of red from the tips of her pretty little ears to the cleavage hidden under her shirt. What I wouldn’t give to follow that blush.

Somehow, I think with my big head again and ask, “You all right?” The words are thick, spoken through a tight throat.

She shakes her head, clearing her thoughts, not offering any insight when she replies, “Yeah.” Her voice is gruff, the ultimate challenge not to charge across this room, and claim her as mine. “Sorry. Lost in my thoughts.” She waves me off and turns her back, hiding away that beautiful rosy complexion.

Opportunity is knocking, and fucking A, I’m going to snatch that shit up right now. Before I know it, her back is an inch from being flush to my front. Her sharp intake of breath shoots straight to my cock as my lips brush against the tip of her ear to say, “Were you thinking of me? The soap dripping down my skin, touching every surface.” She shivers when my breath tickles her ear. “If you want more than a mental image, next time you can join.”

The air in her lungs rushes out all at once as I step away. She has to steady herself against the bed with her knees so she doesn’t fall face-first onto the bed. A dick move for sure, but she needs to know how serious I am about us.

Instead of pushing the subject, I plop on the bed and toss a pillow behind my head. I try to appear calm and collected, even though my raging boner is pointing to the popcorn ceiling. “I’m staying in tonight. You want to do something?”

She whips around, exasperated, and glaring at me like I’ve lost my ever-loving mind. “Seriously? You’re just going to…” She shakes her head, cutting off the rest of her words.

I hold my hand up. “Before you continue, you already know that I want you, but I won’t push you into something more. I’ll wait until you decide, but for now, we can just be friends.”

She’s cocks her head to the side, studying my words for their sincerity. She wants more. She’s just scared of the fallout we’ll face if we became a couple. “Just friends?” she asks, challenging me. Never has she known me to be “just friends” with a girl I’m attracted to.

I nod, paired with a genuine smile. “Just friends. No pressure.”

It works. She sees my sincerity and her body language relaxes. “That would be great,” she breathes out, letting me see how anxious she is. “I need to relax tonight.”

I open my mouth to respond. The friend rule doesn’t start until we go out, right?

Her eyes snap back, pinning me with a warning. “Don’t you say it,” she growls, violence vibrating through her words.

“I wasn’t going to say anything.” My gigantic grin says that yes, yes, I was about to say something.

She can’t help herself as a smile stretches across her pretty lips. “I hate you.”

“No, you don’t.” I chuckle, bouncing to my feet. “What do you want to do tonight?” Changing the topic is safer. What I said earlier about us being friends the rest of the trip was the whole truth, unless she decides differently.

“I don’t know. I’m kind of hungry. What about you?” She’s got a bounce in her step, moving from one place to the next, setting her hygiene items in the bathroom.

“We could go bowling,” I suggest. It’s been quite a few years since we’ve been to a bowling alley. “We can eat there too.”

I’m almost positive she’ll reject the idea, but I’m shocked when she turns around and agrees. “That sounds fun.”

“Great. You need to get ready?”

“No, I’m good. I’m starving, though, so the faster we can get there and order food, the better.” She tucks the room key in her back pocket, along with extra cash, and we’re ready to go.

She amazes me with everything she does, even something as simple as taking less than five minutes to get ready. I’m standing in the middle of the room, watching her like a crazy person, realizing how fucked I really am. So much for being friends. This girl is blowing me away with every word out of her mouth.

“What?” she groans when she catches me staring.

I step towards her, smiling like a loon, and tucking a slip of hair behind her ear. “Nothing. You want me to drive?”
