Hot tears streamed down my cheeks at Bennett’s declaration. To hear how he saw me broke my heart in the best way possible. It shattered my doubts and broke the bonds that held my insecurities. If Bennett could believe in me, I would learn to believe in myself, too.

He gave me a kiss on the forehead. “I have so much faith in you and your abilities, but I will be there to help you every moment of every day, if you so wish.”

I nodded and pulled him in close for an embrace. It brought me comfort knowing that I wouldn’t be alone in this. It would be immature of me to think that any part of this journey would be easy.

“We do need to get going, though,” Bennett said, looking around the room. “More of them could be coming soon, once they figure out their task didn’t go according to plan. And with your magic depleted, I don’t want to risk it.”

“You’re right,” I said, scanning the warehouse, eyeing the lifeless bodies that were spread around it. “We need to take care of the bodies.”

“No, we don’t. We should leave them, let them serve as a reminder to whoever finds them that this will be their fate if they choose to come after my queen.”

I nodded in agreement. I didn’t think I’d ever get used to Bennett, or anyone for that matter, calling me that.

I searched the room for my golden dagger, having lost it at some point during my fight with Mendex. I couldn’t leave without it. Even if it didn’t represent who I was anymore, it was still a reflection of the person I once was, and the trials I had gone through to get me to this point. I wasn’t leaving it behind.

I spotted the glint of gold on the ground, but my eyes quickly shifted to the body next to it. I slowly walked over to the dagger, the sound of my footsteps echoing in the vacant warehouse.

There it was, right beside Mendex. My own weapon, the one he used in his last attempt to kill me. I could taste the disappointment on my tongue like metal. I didn’t think I’d ever be able to get over the betrayal.

I grabbed the hilt, cleaning the blood off the blade on Mendex’s jacket. I sheathed my golden dagger back onto my thigh, taking a deep breath, trying to gain control in a world that was teetering on chaos. I had no idea what was in store for me, what I was walking into. I just hoped the stars watched over me now and wouldn’t regret the fate they wrote for me.

As I turned back to Bennett, weight was lifted off my shoulders just at the sight of him. “To Vesper, then?”

He smiled, pride radiating from him. “To Vesper.”
