“As much as I may be annoyed with the enchantment, I really do love Vesper and its people, and it’s because of that that I want to do everything in my power to let them be seen by the world.” He looked over his shoulder at me. “I wish I could stay here and show you everything there is to see and know of Vesper, but we should really only stay the day. I don’t want my father to know we were here, and if we are absent for too long, it could look suspicious.”

“Pater knows of Vesper?” I asked in confusion. He never mentioned it before, but perhaps that was due to the enchantment.

“Unfortunately,” Bennett said bluntly.

A thought came to me. “So Mendex is from Vesper, then?”

Bennett shook his head. “Oh no, he’s not. He actually is from Vicinus.”

“How did you meet him if you’ve been in Vesper this whole time?”

“Well, I knew my father expected me to have had a personal guard while I was in Vicinus, so when I decided it was time for me to return to Veladis, I paid a visit to the Vicinus Royal Guard. I explained to them my position and asked if anyone would join me as my personal guard” He gave an innocent shrug. “Mendex volunteered and seemed eager to get out of the snow kingdom, plus he was one of the younger guards, so I figured he was more likely to stay off my back.”

I was a little disappointed in the answer. I was hoping he was from Vesper, too, so I could ask him all sorts of questions once we returned and share with him about my visit here.

Bennett took my hand in his, eagerly dragging me along. “C’mon, we’re almost there.”

Although I only had the day to see Vesper, I had a strong feeling that this wouldn’t be the last time I was here.
