I let out a chuckle and blood gargled in the back of my throat. “An assassin who is going to die from an assassination attempt, and a healer who can’t even heal herself.”

The ringing in my ears became stronger as I struggled to stay above the surface.

“Bennett, I’m dying,” I whispered.

His voice was strained. “You’re not dying, my angel, I’m getting help right now. Hold on.”

Bright light shone behind my eyelids. “Bennett?”

His grip on me tightened. “I’m right here, Rhia, I’m right here.”

“I want to be buried by the lake.”

He didn’t respond, and I worried I may have just thought the words in my head and they hadn’t actually come out.

“Promise you will do that for me.”

He shook his head, his eyes focused on his destination ahead. “There’s no need for me to promise that, we’re almost to the infirmary.”

“Promise me,” I pleaded, coughing as blood filled my mouth.

“Rhia, please,” he said, the words muffled between his sobs.

I opened my eyes one last time, to take in the beautiful boy who held me with tears streaming down his face.

“Promise,” I whispered.

“Damnit, Rhia, yes I promise, but I also promise to save you.” He tilted his chin up and screamed to the world above, “Stars, don’t take her from me!”

I smiled, feeling peace over the fact that my friends could still visit me at our favorite spot. My breathing slowed and I could see white hidden behind my eyelids.

“Don’t leave me, Rhia, we need you. I need you. Stars, I love you so damn much and I need the chance to tell you.”

My senses gave up and I could no longer hear or feel anything as I drifted into oblivion and felt peace at last.
