“Kendall Caro,” Lauren clarified. “All the gays in the tri-county area will be there. Since she hit it big in real estate, she rented The Coco Plum Woman’s Club. An extravagant waste of money, but the food will be fantastic.”

Sylvie wavered.

“A little too public for a first date?” Lauren guessed.

“No, it’s not that.” Her top lip twitched. “Although it would be kind of funny to see people’s faces if they saw us together. “

“I might not even tell Dom and Melissa before hand. I’m just going to show up with you on my arm.”

Sylvie laughed. “They’ll think you’ve lost your mind.”

“I mean . . . maybe I have.” Lauren tipped her head to the side.

Sylvie’s cheeks brightened like the sky at dawn. “Shut up.” She leaned over, kissing her again. A quick and insufficient meeting of their lips.

Lauren suddenly couldn’t wait to be finished with the Whitney. “What do you suggest then?”

“About what?” Sylvie floated away again, this time toward her neatly arranged empanada display.

Instead of chasing her like she wanted, Lauren returned to her booth where she had too much to do before the gates opened to the public. Without a word, Sylvie followed her.

“About our big first date,” Lauren explained, pulling a cord to uncover the rest of her booth.

Sylvie started unpacking Lauren’s wagon. It took all of Lauren’s self-control not to mention it. She just allowed her stomach to flutter straight into her chest without uttering a word of thanks.

“How about something we would have done in high school?” Sylvie opened a large glass container of baked goods without commenting on their unorthodox innards.

Lauren used her fingers to coax her hair into a ponytail, the mild excretion combined with the afternoon heat making her sweat. “Are you going to wear your old uniform? I bet it still fits you.”

“When did you become such a pervert, Lauren?” she snapped, but her face couldn’t hide her amusement.

Laughing, Lauren returned to the very important topic of their date. “So, what’s a high school date?”

“Do you trust me?”

“Absolutely not,” Lauren joked.

“Good,” Sylvie replied as if Lauren had said yes. “I’ll pick you up at eight tomorrow?”

“What about tonight?” Lauren shuffled across the sand and back to Sylvie’s side.

“Tonight?” Sylvie’s eyes dipped to Lauren’s lips. “Tonight, you sleep because there’s no way we’ll be done packing up before one in the morning, and I don’t want you to be dragging on our date.”

The sound of Sylvie saying our date, turned Lauren’s heart into an helium balloon. “So, bossy,” she pretended to complain.

“You love it,” Sylvie replied. “Give me that so I can put it in the warming drawer,” she demanded in the same pain-in-the-ass way she said everything.

Lauren couldn’t wait for tomorrow.
