CHAPTER29

Idlingoutside Lauren’s house on Saturday night, Sylvie debated what to do. Texting her that she was outside seemed cold and wrong for a first date. Sauntering up to her door and knocking felt overly familiar.

As Sylvie weighed her options, Lauren emerged from her house. Dressed in tight jeans that flattered all of her curves and a sleeveless black top, Lauren was jaw dropping. With her long, wavy hair loose and wild, she looked just like she had in high school. Effortlessly beautiful.

There was nothing effortless about Sylvie. She’s spent the morning at the salon getting a mani-pedi in ruby red, having fresh blonde highlights put in, and styling her hair into messy beach curls. Even the white linen dress and brown leather sandals were new. They’d taken hours to pick out.

“Hey!” Lauren’s dimpled smile beamed, producing a jolt stronger than a thousand Redbulls. Take that Helen of Troy.

“Hey,” Sylvie replied, suddenly nervous that Lauren was climbing into her Jeep.

After a moment’s hesitation, Lauren leaned over the center console and kissed her. Her glossy lips were only on her for a moment, but when Lauren pulled away, Sylvie’s red lipstick had tinted her full lips.

“You have a little. . .” Sylvie reached out, using her thumb to clean the mark under her bottom lip.

“Trying to get rid of the evidence?” Lauren chuckled, her dark eyes bright.

Sylvie’s gaze remained glued to Lauren’s face. She’d always been annoyingly attractive, but in the glow of her dashboard, she was stunning.

“You look beautiful,” Lauren said, her voice low and her eyes fixed on her.

Lauren’s voice restarted Sylvie’s brain.

“What?” She looked down at her very new dress. “This old thing?”

“I’m pretty sure you’d look amazing even in a potato sack.” Lauren grinned before moistening her lips. “Or in nothing at all.”

“Shut up.” Sylvie shoved her playfully, still unsure how to accept anything but barbs from her.

“It’s true,” Lauren replied with a shrug. “So, where are we going on our high school date? Or do you expect to sit in my driveway all night?”

“You’ll see,” Sylvie replied with a mischievous grin.

“The mystery continues then.” She leaned back into the passenger seat.

Sylvie started the playlist she’d spent all day curating. The one that started with Jesse McCartney’s Beautiful Soul.

“Whaaaat! I’ve never been on a date with its very own soundtrack.” Lauren cranked up the volume and danced in her seat. “What do you think Jesse McCartney is doing right now?”

“The real question is what is t.A.T.u doing?” Sylvie turned onto the main street leading out of Lauren’s neighborhood. The one that lead to her own house. Guilt and shame tugged at her empty stomach as she imagined Lauren dropping her off when she was drunk.

“Oh man. I was obsessed with t.A.T.u in middle school. I think I watched that music video about a zillion times.” Lauren clutched her chest where her low cut blouse showed off her amply cleavage. “My little gay heart.”

“Thanks for the other night,” Sylvie blurted before her nerve ran off.

Lauren stopped dancing. “For what?”

Sylvie winced. “Don’t make me say it. It’s embarrassing enough as it is.”

“Say what?” Lauren’s innocent act wasn’t fooling anyone.

“You’re the worst, you know that?”

Lauren laughed. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Thank you for taking care of me when I was an inebriated mess, Lauren.” She curled her toes like she was enduring a root canal. “I can’t believe I made such a fool of myself.”

Lauren reached across the center console and took her hand. The heat from their interlaced fingers was blistering.
