CHAPTEREIGHT

ETHAN

My self-control surprised me.

I've wanted her in my bed since the first time I saw her, looking up at me with her innocent green eyes. While her heart hated me, her body did not. I was so hard for herthat I fearedI had sentenced myself to blue balls.

The fact that she was a virgin made me want to take her and have her at my mercy even more. Every inch of her body was a work of art, and I wanted to savor it, take my time, and have my way with it. Even though I was several doors away from her, the feel of her warm and soft skin tingled my hand.

I have to make her mine.

My blunder earlier didn't bother me as much anymore. She was in my house, so I could take my time.

My phone beeped once more, rescuing me from my lustful thoughts. I remembered the message I had received while still with Vanessa. There was business to be done, and I needed to get my mind back on track without being distracted by her.

The next day, I ran into Romero, one of the men, at the top of the stairs.

"Good morning," he said, bowing slightly. It was a new chapter in my life that I had to accept; people were forced to show their appreciation for me and stay on my good side because of my new title.

I was supposed to have dinner with Uncle Luke today. After the incident with Fred Westbrook, I invited him to dinner to smooth things over. I hadn't killed Fred as my uncle had requested, which would have pleased him, but I had naturallydecided to keep Vanessa's abduction to myself.

"Has my uncle arrived, Romero?" I asked him asI descended the spiral stairs. My soldier trailed close behind.

"Mr. Luke has been here for a few moments. Tristan told me to come to you because he believes things with your uncle are about to go bad. He's waiting for you," Romero notified me.

"I know what he wants," I said as I waved Romero away, and he hurried away.

As I walked into the dining room to meet my uncle, I couldn't help but smile. He bore his usual solemn expression whilehe waited for me to take my place at the head of the table.

Luke Levine was a tall man with thick angry brows and a pointy chin. He had a face that made rage appear effortless, but he was often reserved. I knew it took a lot of control for him to appear approachable, especially after removing his left arm.

"Uncle, you'requite early. You wanted to surprise me?" I asked him as I sank into my seat. I'd had a long day of riding around and meeting with the family's business partners, so our dinner had to be quick.

"Heard you were back from Fred Westbrook and thought we could talk," he said, finally taking his seat. Even though Luke Levine had become a shadow of the man he once was, everyone still feared him. None of the men wanted to irritate him.

"Of course. I returned home late last night, you see, so I couldn't invite you over," I said.

Being a don meant that I couldn't simply apologize in front of my men. I had to be tough and strong. The Chicago undergroundonly responded to fear.

I would have apologized to my uncle a few months ago, but things had changed. He understood. Luke simply nodded, not taking offense. I could tell he wanted to speak privately because his eyes darted left and right.

When I looked at Tristan, he immediately understood. He stood up from the table and motioned for the two guards in the room to accompany him.

When the room was quiet, Luke bombarded me with questions. They were numerous, but they all dealt with the same subject: Fred Westbrook.

"You said you were going to kill him. Why didn't you?" he asked me with an emotionless look.

I leaned forward in my seat, perplexed as to why he appeared to have changed his mind. "I thought you'd be relieved I didn't kill him. After all, wasn't that what you wanted?"

"You're not in a position to make compulsive decisions such as changing your mind whenever you feel like it," my uncle explained in his mentor voice.

"I took his niece instead," I explained.

"Why would you do that?" he asked calmly, despite the fact that his rage was growing.

I took a deep breath and told him how things were. "Fred isn't going anywhere as long as I have his niece. He loves her as if she were his own daughter."
