We took bigger steps, and to our delight, the guards maintainedtheir distance while keeping a close eye on us. They weren't far behind, but we couldtalk without being heard.

"Vanessa, I have something to tell you," Anna said, taking a deep breath and turning to face me.

I nodded slowly, mybody instinctivelytensing to whatever she was about to say.

"You never wondered why I became so worried that day, when Ethan and the other men came to the restaurant."

I slowly shook my head. "I assumed you were aware that they were well-known on the streets?" I shrugged because I knew nothing about gangs.

"No. Certainly not on these streets. My father, on the other hand, has served the Robinsons and—"

"Who exactly are the Robinsons?"

"Consider them the Levines' rivals. My family will come for me. It's only a matter of time, and with the Robinsons on his tail, Ethan will be taken downsooner."

My stomach clenched in fear, but I forced a fake smile on Anna. I didn't want Ethan taken down for some strange reason, but I did want to be free again and have Anna and my uncle safe.

I gripped her hand. "Uncle Fred won't sit still either."

"Wasyour uncle really—"

"He was," I said quietly, still struggling to accept it.

"I'm sorry, Vanessa. I know he's a good man who has always looked after you."

"I know he is, and maybe being a gang member isn't the worst thing in the world. Even though your family is connected to the Mafia, you're still the best person I know. What Ican't stand isdeception and lies. Gangs are dangerous, and I had a right to know."

"Vanessa, I'm sorry. I would have told you everything I knew about Ethan if I had known it would ever matter. I even let you go and served him because I assumed he wouldn't try to harm you. The less you know, the saferyou are. I believe your uncle was simply trying to protect you in the same way."

I smiled at her, grateful for her presence. "Thank you very much. He is a good man, and I need to focus on his positive qualities.I owe it to all the sacrifices he made for my sake."

Anna gaveme a friendly smile. "I'm not going to let you forget. He was our most generous tipper."

"Did you know about my uncle?"

"No," she said, shaking her head and looking at me with genuine eyes, so I believed her.

I sighed once more. "Do you think he knew about you?"

"I mean, it's possible. However, I'm confident that your uncle, my family, and the Robinsons will come to our aid. I can sense it." She said it with such assurance that it almost put my mind at ease.

"I can only hope they do." I forced a tight smile.

"What are you doing so close to the exit?" one of the guards asked, and I realized we'd arrived at the entrance gates while I was lost in our conversation.

I exchanged glances with Anna as they approached us, realizing that we'd never be able to escape their gaze.

"Is it not permitted to walk to this side?" I askedthe guard, hoping for more time to speak with her privately.

"You can walk over here, but we'll have to follow," he saidemotionlessly. I wondered if all the men here were robots, with their tight and mechanical expressions.

I sighed internally but nodded as we continued walking. I felt as if I'd never be able to breathe freely again. Ethan was dangerous, and I needed to keep that in mind. He was ruthless, had enemies, and killed people. He was the type of man I would normally avoid, and he was everything I feared.

At the same time, he was much more. That was the part that scared me the most. I had seen his eyes and felt his touch on my skin while we were having sex. I knew that while it may have seemed like a casual fuck to him, he could have been much rougher. He might have taken me against my will. He hadn't, however.

He had demanded and won my consent, instilled in me a desire to taste him, and left me wanting more. And now,I wasdrowning.
